Full year abroad in Nigeria during sophomore year (I have started my common app on this, very captivating story)

Planning on: NHS Science, Start a Political Debate Club, Summer Program at CMU, Teach myself Chinese, CFO of a company run by friends that makes tens of thousands a year (currently planning stuff out)

I’m applying to top tier schools. Assuming my grades and test scores are of the average applicant, how would you rate my ECs?

Thanks guys

So…what is your passion?

try to get some awards in addition to leadership positions

If you’re looking to get in based on athletics, your ec’s look good. Year abroad in Nigeria is a great hook. Otherwise, you should think about rounding out your extracurriculars with any nonathletic clubs you’re interested in. What are you interested in majoring in? Any awards you’ve gotten in the past? You’ll be an interesting applicant for sure, but being well-rounded is a must. Good luck!

@paul2752 My ultimate goal is to expand the natural resource industry in Nigeria and the rest of West Africa. I’ll prolly get a joint degrre in Environmental Studies and get my MBA.

@ffina23 I mean I play piano and love politics and activism, but I spend most of my time training for soccer

@puzzled123 I’ll prolly be president of two or three clubs next year, I don’t know what awards to strive for…that’s not really my thing, ya know?

What did you do in Nigeria? Was it a volunteer experience? If so, don’t write about it.

For top schools, your EC AS AN ATHLETE is decent enough(if not sparkling) but if your main interest is what you wrote in your reply, then your EC doesnt really show much I think?

And…what is your test score/GPA? “assuming this and that” is totally meaning less

@paul2752 my parents grew up there. They started off in small villages in southern Nigerian and now they are very successful (my mom even has an MD from Harvard). I went because I really wanted to experience what they did as kids. Little did I know that the experience would change me forever. I began to truly value education. I faced flogging, malaria, terrorism, limited water and electricity, all sorts of things. It was a really intense year. The whole time my parents were scared as hell (I went alone) but I pulled thru.I made life long brothers there. Overall it was an amazing experiences. I developed a passion for the country and culture and want to contribute my life to Nigeria. My dream is to expand the natural resource industry there. It will bring jobs, stabilize the economy, disrupt corruption between govt and oil companies, stump Book Haram enrollment, etc. Its a great idea, I just need an A+ eduction if I wanna be accountable for the lives of millions of people.

anyway,

my GPA is 4.2 weighted and 3.6 UW, kinda low but schools will see that my freshman year is truly the only thing that brought me down

my first ACT was a 29, I’m going for a 32

OP try President’s Volunteer Service Award- should just be filling out a form considering you are already volunteering. Also, if you do start a debate club, plenty of opportunities to win some good awards there.

EC’s look good and writing about the things you witnessed will be very good in admissions.

Especially the flogging part which is intense.

Good luck!

@ItsHydro thanks!

what do you love doing? what are your favorite 1-3 EC’s? Really focus on these, try to get leadership positions in these, or try to win an award or something, all while doing what you love. you seem like a qualified athlete, so that’s pretty impressive - could you be a captain or something? and the CFO idea is pretty cool, as are your volunteer stuff. I’d say you are in a good place, but everyone always has room to improve, so try to accrue another leadership position or something. As for starting the debate team, unless you LOVE it (I can never tell a person not to do what they love), I’d advise against it: it’s hard & lengthy to create a club/team, and it seems like you are filling up your app since you are doing it senior year. As always, just keep on doing what you love , and success will follow! good work so far!

You’re so accomplished!!! However, try to make something you NUMBER ONE priority, admission officers find that better than a list of things you’ve done. Maybe soccer is your true passion- have you won any awards in that? If so, make sure to put that down. Make sure to get specific.

You’ve gotta show some more diversity/well-rounded-ness in your ECs. I think a lot of what you’ve done so far is humanitarian, people-helping things. Where is the fine arts or sciences or different things? Try to diversify yourself and you should be good! Good luck!

@healthandmusic i play piano and am very fond of music haha. Maybe I should put more consideration into it!

Focus on one thing.

By the way, do you need FA? How much can you pay/year?

Does it really have to be top schools?

@paul2752

I don’t NEED FA. When it comes to HYPS I will gladly pay full price but anything else i’d like around $5,000 in aid per year.

And yes, it needs to be a school known internationally (for specific reasons)

Why? is it peer/community pressure?
