I'm a rising sophomore, and taking a look around CC I've found my EC's are grossly inadequate. I'm really freaking out, so after looking at my school's website, I've put together a list of potential EC's I could add on. Would this be alright to potentially get me into a good college (my top choice is Cornell College of Arts and Sciences- I've already visited when my older sister was doing college tours, and I will definitely be applying ED).

So here goes nothing:

9th grade:
Art club
Tutoring middle schoolers once a week 1st semester
Quiz club (JV A team)

EC's I'll probably be adding:
Volunteering at a local soup kitchen
KIVA club
Volunteering at a local library (summers)
Raising money to build a school in rural China
Students for Political Activism
Model Congress
I will also continue to be in the quiz club (moving up to varsity in the fall). With some luck, we will probably qualify for nationals by the time I'm a junior.

Induction to NHS, science honor society, art honor society, and Chinese honor society can probably be expected at the end of next year- don't know if these count, but at my school to be a continued member you are expected to tutor.

So what do you guys think? Do I need all of these additional EC's, or will just adding a few be fine? Also, are they of good quality (I'm interested in pursuing social studies)?

Thanks!!

You have a good number of ECs, but IMO they are all generic. I don’t mean that they are bad… Just that a lot of people do them.

Maybe you could find a college near you and go to a summer camp there and/or take a class that focuses on your interests.

I’m not sure what is available for social studies in your area, but if you could find a place to intern or shadow that might help too.

Just continue to do what you enjoy and don’t be afraid to find other ways to pursue it!

Your question of “good quality” of your ECs is only answerable by you. You should only pick up an activity if you are passionate about it and have a genuine interest in pursuing it. That’s what determines quality, not the title. So we can’t determine that, only you.

Focus on whatever makes you the happiest, and drop whatever you hate doing. Trust me. Colleges won’t care how many clubs you get into. They only take into account what your passions are, and how committed you are. I’ve dropped Leadership, Drama, Key Club, etc. only to focus more on two sports that I wasn’t the greatest at but that I enjoyed the most, and I still got into a top 20-30 college.

Make sure you get a high level role in some of your EC’s, like founder and president, and do what the other posters say; make sure you love it before you do it. Seriously, EC’s matter little if you are not enjoying them, because that can lead to poor school performance and a lower GPA, which is way more important.
