How are my ECs?

I'm only a sophomore but this is what I plan on doing for the rest of high school.

Field Hockey - 4 years
Softball - 4 years
Science Club - 3 years
Math Team - 3 years
Recycling Club - 3 years
GSA - 3 years
Engineering Club - 3 years
Ski and Snowboard Club - 3 years
National Honor Society - Senior Year
- Founder of school’s Science Olympiad Team

Hook - I’m teaching myself how to write in shorthand.

Volunteer Work/ Community Service/Jobs
- I am a coach for my middle school’s successful Science Olympiad team
- About 5 times per year I go “lake testing” in my town’s local lake. We collect samples and bring them to the High School lab where we test the chlorophyll, pH, and other things.
- In the summer, I’m a helper in the Science Room where we do all sorts of experiments [paid job]
- Might become an assistant soccer coach.

Are these good enough for you’re average State College? Would there be anything I could do to make them stronger? I'm having trouble finding ways to do community service and volunteer work.

Yes, you’re doing plenty.

But your grades, test scores and course rigor are much more important anyway, so worry more about them than about having a ton of ECs (unless you like all your ECs, in which case, awesome), volunteer hours, or “leadership positions.”

Hmmm, some of your things say 3 years, which indicate you haven’t started it yet(since you will be a sophmore after this summer im betting). Actually more than half the things on your list say three years.

Are you REALLY sure you can do that without knowing what kind of commitment each activity is? I think you will be over straining yourself. If you really end up doing this, you might become a “jack or all trades and master of none”. Colleges would rather have you do one activity and go really far in it than see many activities with no leadership positions.

From what I saw, i know a lot of people who focused on one activity, research for example, and got very far in it, winning several competitions and making tons of money, while gaining leadership roles. Or getting to be team captain of a varsity sports team…etc.

Focus on what you seem to already have: Field Hockey and Soccer and go far in each of them. Maybe pick out one or two from you list of to do activities for next year.
