How are scholarships awarded for continuing students?

How does the scholarship process work for continuing students? When I did my applications I got scholarship notifications sent along with or shortly after acceptance letters, that I had been automatically considered for when I applied for admission. When I fill out my FAFSA for next school year will I just automatically be considered for scholarships again, or do I have to find them all myself, or perhaps just some of them? Are there any for continuing students or is automatic consideration for scholarships only for incoming students? I've never been a continuing student before, besides at my CC which had almost zero scholarship opportunities, so I just realized I don't know how it works and definitely need to figure it out.

wow… bunch of questions just crammed together…I’ll try answering more systematically.

“When I fill out my FAFSA for next school year will I just automatically be considered for scholarships again, or do I have to find them all myself, or perhaps just some of them?”
You must apply for FAFSA every year to be eligible for need-based aid. If you do not file, you won’t receive the aid. Also, I’m not to sure which scholarship you are referring to in this question, so it would be nice if you can clarify.

"Are there any for continuing students or is automatic consideration for scholarships only for incoming students?"
There are automatic consideration for scholarships for incoming students mainly based on merit [since need-based is usually covered by FAFSA] but there are also scholarships for continuing students too. A list of possible scholarships can be found in the following page:

Some of the scholarships, you will need to apply for, some are automatic in consideration.
Look for those that are for CC

“I’ve never been a continuing student before, besides at my CC which had almost zero scholarship opportunities, so I just realized I don’t know how it works and definitely need to figure it out.”

Just look at the Michigan financial office’s website. Its decently organized and has a lot of information. If you feel confused, visit the Financial aid office at

Office of Financial Aid

Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1316

You definitely should not feel confused about financial aid and miss out on opportunities for free aid so check it out.

You also have to submit the CSS PROFILE, don’t you? Or is that a one time only thing?

Yeah, you do. I won’t qualify for anything need based, I intend to file anyway but I am sure I won’t get anything from that besides the unsub stafford loans. I am not referring to any scholarships in particular, I was just wondering generally speaking if I am in consideration for any scholarships automatically (like you sometimes are when you apply to schools) or if I have to seek out individual ones and apply for them. I could be thinking about this entirely the wrong way, as I said I don’t really know how it works anymore when you aren’t an incoming freshman/transfer.

For example, I didn’t get any scholarships from Michigan but I got a few from other schools when I applied for admission. I hadn’t applied for any scholarships but I was considered automatically as an incoming student. I didn’t know if there was some sort of a competition pool automatically constructed like this for continuing students (I feel like this is unlikely?) or if we have to specifically seek out each and every scholarship we could possibly be eligible for and individually apply.

Just file for FAFSA and CSS just for the financial aid office to have an idea on how much you and your family makes. This may be put into account for merit scholarships.

So Michigan has merit scholarships that are automatically given to students and those that you must apply for. As a CC transfer, there are several scholarships that are available for you listed on the scholarship list
[University of Michigan Office of Financial Aid: OFA Scholarship Listing](http://www.finaid.umich.edu/types_of_financial_aid/scholarships/ships.asp)
There are scholarships that you are automatically considered for like the community college scholarship but if you were awarded that, you probably would have heard by now.
Also, you may want to seek out individual ones from outside sources.

Because michigan is a competitive school, they don’t really have a merit scholarship for people over a certain gpa or w.e. standards. They simply award them to who they believe merits the scholarship.

I don’t have any experience with them, but I have heard that there are departmental scholarships that are awarded to exceptional upperclassmen. For example, once you have a major, and you become involved with that department, they have a few awards to give to those they think have promise. You could call the department you are majoring in and ask about. it.
