I've just been admitted and I didn't get a chance to make a visit to the campus...
i'd just like to know how the people and professors at Rice are.
1. Are they nerds (at least some of them should be...)
2. Are they fun to be with, and do they come from diverse backgrounds?
3. Rice doesn't have a very sizeable international student population. Being Asian (Indian actually), I'd love to be among other Asians and Indians too...Is the campus diverse?

I'd really appreciate honest answers to the above questions...i really don't know where i'm gonna join - Rice is definitely at the top of my list (especially since my top choices - MIT and Stanford- didn't admit me).

My son graduates in less than 45 days(!!!!!!) and these are my observations of the last four years:
He is an EE major -- not only is he not a nerd, I don't think of any of his friends as nerds either. Maybe the housemate who "lives" in his lab might be a little nerdy, but I never met him. But if you are thinking of Weird Al's "White and Nerdy", think again. Not my experience. I'm sure they're out there. They're just not my son's friends.

Out of the last statistics available, the undergrad student body is:
54% White
16% Asian American
12% Hispanic
7% African American
5% Not reported
2% Multiracial
1% Native American

3% of the undergrads are international, with the largest proportions from China and India.

I've met Rice kids through my daughter, and twice the team she plays on has stayed at my house. I also know several kids who attended Rice. Nice kids, fun to be around, able to carry on conversations without saying "like, you know, like, you know, like, like, like", unpretentious, interesting, diverse. I've been very impressed with kids I've met from Rice. I'm planning on sending my son to Rice next year, and he's a very funny, friendly guy.

Rice is where the, generally, more lax yet just as talented students go. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. We have the stress of working hard, but we don't make it our lives. Study hard play hard is the motto.

yes, but they're awesome nerds and it isn't usually the first word you'd use to describe a Rice student

I think so. I'm a dual citizen (US/UK) if that counts for anything

lots of asians and a number of Indians

A lot of people are quirky geeks (like me :)), but I wouldn't consider them nerdy since they are very approachable. People are generally fun to be with, and the student body is very diverse geographically, culturally, intellectually, and personality wise.

There are a few nerds, but since they are studying all the time and are never around, you don't realize they exist. That is, until you look into the freshman handbook one day and notice a few people you have never seen before.

looking at the sports played at Rice, i was pleasantly surprised to see cricket on the list... cricket is the craze in India, and I'm glad I can continue at college too...
unfortunately though, most most Indians seem to be in grad school...
Princeton Review does say that Rice has a lot of Racial Interaction, and i'm really looking forward to learning about other cultures too!
does it really matter which residential college you're placed in?

Everyone is placed randomly into one of the residential colleges, so you won't find that one is less diverse than another. There are an number of South Asians here at Rice, as well as other Asians, but perhaps not as many as another university. Also, there are a large number of cultural experiences and opps at Rice you could get involved with...for example the South Asian Society is putting on its spring dance show this weekend.
