I applied for Fall 2010 and I'm currently in talks with the head tennis coach for CMS about hopefully playing with the tennis team if I get accepted.

My question is: how are athletics at Claremont McKenna? Is there a big support for them? I know its only D3 so things are not quite as serious as a D1 school, but it would be nice to know that students are supporting their teams.

Also, if there are any athletes reading this (or anyone else who might know!), how rigorous is D3 athletics? Do they train every day? Or how many times a week?

My son met with the baseball coach at CMC when we visited last year. Sounds like the commitment is fairly similar to high school. They start pre-season practices after the winter break. They do not practice year round. They practice everyday during the season when there are not games. Not sure how competitve the tennis team is. Check the website and see what their record is.

Athletics at CMC are solid across the board. Since it’s D3, there are big crowds for every game/match, but when it’s important (league championships, regional playoffs, vs. Pomona-Pitzer, etc.) the support is strong.

Most coaches expect their guys to stay in shape in the off-season, and have some sort of unofficial training expectations. Once in season, NCAA rules limit regulate the amount of time that can be spent on athletics, so it should never be excessive. You’re probably looking at 2-3 hours/day for 5-6 days/week.

Men’s tennis may be the most successful team at CMC. They are consistent national championship contenders, they play in a gorgeous new facility that puts many D1 tennis facilities to shame, and most of their players could have played for D1 schools had they wanted to. Coach Settles is held in high esteem throughout the tennis world and runs a fantastic program. If you can get into CMC and play for the team, you should jump at the chance. I doubt there is a better D3 combination of athletics and academics and, I can’t imagine many better places to play college tennis period.

It is probably a good idea go find the coach’s contact information on the CMS Athletics website and direct questions about specific sports there.

This is a late reply to idad, but lacrosse is a club sport. As you would already know, CMC teams up with Harvey Mudd and Scripps for athletics but club sport is open to all 5Cs. Lacrosse is one of the most successful club sport in claremont and have quite a history. I do not go to CMC myself, but I have a friend who does and play lacrosse there. He was an all-American goalie for high school. So, I believe you have to be quite of a decent player to be a main member. I’m pretty sure though that there are no explicit recruits.

Son plays lacrosse at Claremont. Most of the players are from CMC though my son goes to Pomona. Playing time is determined by skill and the quality of the league, SLC, is good with Chapman being one of the top teams in the country in the MCLA. There are no NCAA Div 1 men’s lacrosse teams on the west coast. I believe the only NCAA team in SoCal is Div III Whittier College. Pomona is building a new underground parking structure on top of which will be an artificial turf field that will be used for lacrosse and other club sports. The current fields tend to get a bit soggy in the rain. Yes it does rain here though for tomorrows game the temperatures should be sunny and in the mid-70’s. You can go to claremontlax.com but the hosting company sometimes requires you to use [The Coug Nation - Claremont Lacrosse](Claremont Cougars Lacrosse)
