How are the bathrooms set up at Stanford?

I'm going to be applying in January, but I'm really against the bathrooms... I'm going to be staying in a single dorm, but what are the bathrooms like? I read that they're coed and that makes me very VERY uncomfortable. I don't want to be showering in the same room as a guy. Are there doors on the showers? Anything for privacy? I guess I'd be okay with a curtain but that can easily be whipped open. This bathroom really is the deciding factor on whether I apply there or not.

I’m sure they are set up to be full of intellectual vitalities there.

Hi! So not all Stanford frosh bathrooms are co-ed, only a few of the freshman dorms have this setup. I was in one of those dorms.

Basically, you walk in and there is a general sink area that is co-ed, but then the girls’ and guys’ showers/toilets are set off on opposite sides of the room (left/right) behind more (lockable) doors. So the only place where it is truly coed is at the sinks, in the center of the room. It was a little weird at first, of course, but your privacy is never compromised.

Additionally, If you are lucky enough to get in, you can also indicate on the housing form that you would like to be placed on a single-gender floor/hall in a frosh dorm, which would then guarantee you a single-gender bathroom.

Although I must say that if something as small as the bathroom setup is “the deciding factor on whether [you] apply there or not”… I would take a hard look at whether you really love Stanford or not. Something like that really shouldn’t be the breaking point in this important decision (and - believe it or not - other colleges have co-ed bathroom setups like this…)

Also - there are no “single dorms” for freshman. All freshmen have a roommate unless you have serious medical needs or you’re Chelsea Clinton.

A description of the residences is at http://web.stanford.edu/dept/rde/cgi-bin/drupal/housing/housing/residence-halls</a> . The links from the page describe the bathroom setups at the different houses. Having the described setup with co-ed sinks is not common.

It’s my understanding that Chelsea Clinton had a roommate in freshman year.

Yea Clinton had a roommate, but if you have medical needs you can get a single.

Most freshman bathrooms indeed aren’t coed. Showers have doors AND curtains, at least in the dorm I lived in.
