how are the dormrooms?

its probably on a case by case basis, but how are the rooms at yale? big? cold? warm? comfortable? good and bad please. i didnt get to see a dorm room at yale, at harvard they were pretty damn big, maybe yale would be somewat similar, being the second most endowed after H. So tell all!

I have a single in Bingham, and I think it is very, very nice (I've noted, however, that most singles aren't quite as big). I like Bingham, because it is built in a quaint, old-fashioned style, instead of the newer, but less aesthetically pleasing halls of other dorms. However, some of the doubles can range from very large (like you won't believe), to very small (like one person is more than enough, thank you). I think Vanderbilt dorms are nice, so are Farnam's and Welch's (on the fourth floor of each entryway in Welch, there is a "princess suite" which is like a two-floor deluxe apartment). Lanman Wright's are just very, very small. Durfee's are okay, in my estimation.

That's like a basic overview.

thanks!
(note, just saying thanks apparently isnt long enough for CC, so im going to eat up some space by typing this)

For the non OC dorms, Silliman is smaller than your average OC dorm room and you generally have a quad with two doubles and a common room and the doubles can be very small (most people have to bunk their beds). Silliman also has the smallest entryways at Yale so you really bond with your entryway (unless you hate everyone in them). Silliman will be renovated in your sophomore year so right now its a little worn although not as bad as I have heard the other colleges or OC dorms were before renovation. TD has about the same size rooms (maybe slightly bigger) and they are all renovated and nice.

My interviewer told me that some of the suites have one large room and one small room. In the olden days, the large room was for the student and the small room was for his valet. How nifty is that?

Not so nifty if you are assigned the valet's room.

I think my suite is like that. It only has two rooms, one quite large and one quite small. What I don't understand for the life of me, however, is why the small one was made into a double and the large one is my single. How odd is that?

How did you manage to get the single?

I wouldn't mind having a double. I think it would be fun to live with someone. My mind might change though if I had an unruly roommate :p

i definitely dig roomates, in fact, i couldnt imagine having a single. isnt part of college that like unruliness, that crazy stuff that comes with having to live and die and party with certain ppl, like roomates, 24/7?

But if you live in a suite with two other people, yet still get your own room...how can you go wrong??

"How did you manage to get the single?"

I have no idea, but I'm pretty glad I did. I know people having huge roommate trouble, and it is impossible to change unless they're abusing you or something. Even if your roommate is perfectly sane, I hear my suitemates ask for permission to go to bed, to enter their own room, etc., and I'm very content. Also, there is a lot of sexiling in my entryway as well, something that would anger me greatly if it happened to me. I feared at first that I would be isolated, but that is not the case. In fact, I hardly spend any time here at all. I just have this room here when I need it...my little haven of sanity.

Also, you tend to abandon the idea of your suitemates/roommates becoming your best of buddies after a while. For the first few weeks, you all are glued together, then you slowly drift apart. I mean, while I'm friendly and enjoy the company of my suitemates, you tend to find other people outside of your suite to party and get crazy with, that are perhaps more like you. Of course, that is not always true but I find it generally to be true.

That sounds perfect.

I hang around my suitemates ALL the time.... we eat together, we do stuff together, we go to concerts together... of course, I have other friends too, but suitemates take up half of my social life. =) Although this is not true for a lot of people.

Singles are pretty common.

of course, i have six suitemates =) My friend is in the YSO, and all except one (5 of us) got season passes to the YSO. that's how united we are...

hey upandover are ur suitemates intl??

Upandover, that sounds so wonderful. YSO=Yale Symphony Orchestra?

Just to clarify, does a "single" mean a single room within a suite (that you share with other people)? Or a single room with a lock on the door? Also, how many people usually share a suite? I was in Branford this summer, so I stayed in a 3 person suite and we all had our own rooms...are other colleges similar?

A single usually means a single room within a suite. 3-6 people share a suite, though 6-person suites are a lot more common than 3-person suites.

p.s., I'm only speaking of frosh dorms on the OC. I haven't been in the dorms of many of the residential colleges.

Wow, 6 people sharing a suite, I would love that so much!

Thanks for the response, Candi :)

Yeah I think that is so cool. You get to sleep alone in peace but still have 5 other people to get really close with and live with.
