How was move in? How is you DD/DS adjusting?

DS’s move into the honors residence went very smoothly. We got there at 8 so it wasn’t very crowded yet. He is on the second floor so we just used the steps. My husband and I did make a few trips to Lowes and Walmart to get a few things. My son and his roommate are getting along well and hang out together. I think they already have a group of people to do things with. He likes his classes, is working out daily at the Strom and has already resported that he has successfully done a load of laundry! Handling this empty nest is so much easier when you know your kids are happy.

I agree that it’s easier to handle the empty nest when your child is so happy! We are thrilled with the honors dorm, and were able to deposit all our DD2’s belongings on Friday night and avoid the street scene on Saturday, although I think the area around the honors was less congested than center campus. I was disappointed in the move-in communication direction from the university, even after referring to the move-in guide. We did not visit the Russell House area to see the parents’ booths, so maybe that is our fault. Otherwise, DD is having fun discovering everything new. She started out in rush but decided it wasn’t for her and withdrew after a few days. She has had no problems making friends and has found everyone to be very accepting of her as a “northerner.” She is being challenged to find the healthy food options that fit the meal plan and has consistently gone over each day, reporting that the Russell House offers the “cheeseburgers, fries, and drink” as a meal unit but if you want a turkey sandwich with grapes and salad you will go over your allowance. We prefer she go over her plan and try and eat somewhat healthy! She will figure it out eventually, hopefully without too much weight gain (LOL). She’s skyped more than I expected, which is okay with me, much more contact than DD1 ever initiated.

My house does not resemble an empty nest, more like an abandoned one, as their stuff is still all over the place. I guess now is my time to finally get organized…maybe later.

I know as a Freshman my D struggled to find the healthy places to eat within the meal plan. I kow she tried to lunch daily as a place that was in Patterson. I think they may have only been open for lunch. She loved their turkey wrap.

My D has struggled more with having to have the food plan through her sorority. It’s a lot of homey southern cooking. Not what she likes to eat at all. Often times she ends up with a turkey sandwich and salad. Not much value for our $1300 a semester for 10 meals a week. Luckily, she lives in an apartment with her own kitchen. She’s turning into a great cook!

Glad to hear it’s going well for all. D had her first day of classses in Law School last Friday but has stayed in daily touch with her “sisters” via texts, calls and emails which kept her abreast of the daily rush activities…apparently all went well with 91 new members. She’s now about 900 miles away but staying close to her good friends who are still in COLA.

kmkord

I too was surprised when I heard the menu that D had with the sorority house meal plan…but then I guess they are more concerned with the possibility of eating disorders and self image…D’s sorority had a really nice salad bar and some other healthy choices like wraps and lots of fresh fruit but apparently the biscuits and gravy, fried chicken and chocolate chip cookies were so good as to be found irresistible by most…:)

Ahhhh…life in the deep south ;)

My daughter has no complaints about the food in the sorority house. She says there’s a great selection and she hasn’t gained a pound! This summer she proved it by putting on a pair of ninth grade pants as she was cleaning out closets!! No freshman 15 in this house.

Seriously, though, best wishes to all the new freshman. My daughter is now a senior and the years really have flown by!

Son’s move in at the honors dorm went great. He is rooming with one of his BF from HS. To our surprise, he pledged a fraternity. He seems to be really enjoying himself and likes his classes and professors. I know he’s been staying up way too late because I’ve been getting 1am texts from him and he always seems to be rushing from one activity to the next whenever we talk to him. Things seem to be going well. Haven’t asked if he’s done laundry yet…not sure I want to know. :)
