how are the GE's at Cal? what are they?

Depends on the college. There are some UC-wide requirements that you take regardless of which UC you attend. There are some Cal-wide requirements. Then there are ‘breadth’ requirements at the College of Letters and Sciences (and to a lesser extent the College of Engineering). Each college has a web site listing all this. Here is the information for College of L&S:

[Degree Requirements & Policies | College of Letters & Science](http://ls.berkeley.edu/?q=undergraduate/degree-requirements-policies)

Most people think of the GEs as the ‘breadth’ requirements - look at that part. Really there are hundreds of classes to choose among, not a small list of specific courses.

They are breadth requirements.

GEs are excuses to take classes that you like but are not necessarily required for you major!

They should be easy/fun!! {easy because they’re fun!}
