How are the people at UCLA??

I am trying to decide between Cal and UCLA. I wanted to know how the people are at UCLA and how the social atmosphere is. Is there a lot of life at UCLA? Is it easy to make friends? Are there a lot of smart people there?
Thanks so much. Any insights would help me make my decision :)

There are a lot of people here. That means that you’re going to find every type of person at UCLA: nerds, athletes, nice people, mean people, anti-social people, incredibly social people etc.

The social atmosphere is good. Almost everyone joins clubs and stuff, and I’d say people are pretty social. However, in college, you pretty much make your own fun. You can be as social or as anti-social as you want to be. There are definitely a lot of smart people here. They had to get in after all!

Have you visited UCLA and Berkeley? That’s a pretty good way to get a vibe for the different student bodies.

I did visit but I liked them both a lot that I still can’t decide…
How is the Business Econ program at UCLA?

I’m not in it so I can’t really say. It has a very good reputation.

No matter what type of person you find here – nerd, jock, etc – you’re pretty much gauranteed that they’ll all be very intelligent because like arcadefire put it, they did have to get in.

people are pretty social, and i’ve had no trouble making friends. while i’m not involved in any clubs, i’d say in general i make 1-2 friends per class per quarter. sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on how social i’m feeling. But i’ve never had trouble making friends here.

remember that if you come here, you’ll be living in LA, which is, arguably, the best city in the world. there’s so many different cultures and interesting people here within the city limits, it’s really amazing. If you have a car, you can drive to many interesting places, but if not, public transportation is really good here too, and you’re just minutes away from the beaches, as well as various emporiums in beverly hills, santa monica, etc.

if you go to berkeley, you’ll just be getting a minimal bump in prestige, not that big of a deal unless you plan to go directly into the job market after work. (or unless you got into haas)

two words: berkeley googles :)

come to LA

^are you sure you didn’t like one over the other because when i visited both last week, they felt completely different. if it comes down to it, just flip a coin and whatever you hope it lands on while its in the air is the school you want to go to.

UCLA has less hippies, personally that’s why I’d go here instead of Cal

For all the people that say UCLA has good looking guys/girls…that only applies to the WHITE people. The Asian girls at UCLA are no different than the ones at Berkeley. If you’re Asian and want to see pretty Asian girls, go to Davis or Irvine.

^I disagree, I’d consider the Asian girls on par with Irvine…if not, we’re at least WAY better than Berkeley. (friends at both schools, pictures from friends). there’s reason why Berkeley gets a bad rep in this case…

@bchplz: are you originally from norcal?

the vast majority of people i’ve met on campus are friendly. Some people are kind of dewchy, but i assume every school has their share of Dbags.

as far as asians girls go, NCAGs tend to be hotter than SCAGs, at least that’s the trend i noticed. Met two asians girls at a social event, and both were kind of awkward. One was a math major, the other was a physics major. Surprise, surprise >.>

What’s the gay environment at UCLA like?

barnaby: I would imagine it’s not a bad place to be (though I admit I’m not actually gay). There’s a relatively large gay population at UCLA, and articles like this support the idea that it’s a fine place to live - [UCLA, Princeton Top Gay-Friendly Colleges List | News | The Advocate](http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2010/08/04/UCLA,_Princeton_Top_Friendliest_Colleges_List/)

I’ve never heard any intolerance or anything like that during my time here.
