I'm an AA interested in applying to Duke but I am curious about the level of racial relations in and around Duke.

if you look at duke’s history, it’s always been a pretty diversity-friendly campus. james duke gave money to the school to help blacks get an education in the south and others donated to promote women in education.

there’s self-segregation like there is at a lot of schools, but it’s not like a dividing line or anything between students.

here is a profile of the class of 2012 with ethnic breakdown: [Duke University Admissions: Class of 2012 Profile](http://www.admissions.duke.edu/jump/applying/who_2012profile.html)

duke also has unique programs like dukeengage ([DukeEngage | Home](http://dukeengage.duke.edu/)) that tries to bridge ties with countries and people of all races.

Duke is a really diverse schools. Many people think that Duke is like 90% Caucasian and that is wrong. You will fit in just fine don’t worry.

And do not forget about the International students!

From what I have seen with our son’s very diverse group of close friends, social self-segregation is certainly only one choice. You get to choose how you handle your relationships with those of your own and other ethnicities.
