How are UCLA football games?

Do they bring the hype that Cal's/USC's/OSU's bring?

How fun are they?

Pretty darn fun if you're in the Den and going crazy with the 8-clap, singing Sons of Westwood.

UCLA basketball games in my opinion are more fun because you don't have to endure the trip to Pasadena.

UCLA football games are about to get a whole lot better now that we have Rick Neuheisel, Norm Chow, and one of the best recruiting classes in the nation.

...and new UCLA marching band uniforms that are actually in our school colors

Why not the pants?

because dressing the entire band in ALL light blue actually looked kind of ridiculous... more costume than uniform.

half light blue half dark blue looks more classy. i have the pictures to prove it (they had SO many test uniforms lol)

liyana179, are you in the band? My son is interested in marching if he is accepted to UCLA. I'd really like to know your thoughts on what it's like?

My son is in the Marching Band. He has had a great time, travelling all over the West to football and basketball games (Bay Area, Las Vegas, Notre Dame, Texas). He also has some incredible memories from this, such as being down on the field when UCLA beat USC, standing right in the middle of all of the football players, coaches cheerleaders, and network sports reporters who were out there.

The marching drills are easier than the ones from high school tournaments, but the tradeoff is that there are more of them to learn, so they have to be learned quickly. Band Camp was rigorous, he was always glad when it was over, but it did give him an edge on meeting people when he was a freshman.

As a parent, it has been a thrill to have a son in the band. We get 2 free season tickets to all the home games, and also the fun of watching for our son out on the field. The games at the Rose Bowl are super fun to go to. Also, for the Away games, we have been able to spot him on television at almost every game. :)

UCLA Band Mom, we love the UCLA band! How fun to be able to see your son on television. UCLA definitely has school spirit and games against sc are so exciting. Traveling to Pasadena is a pain, but a part of UCLA history.

They're cool, but the chants are kinda lame. It's either "U-C-L-A" or "F-U Berkeley!", only to have Cal respond with "Berkeley Rejects!" but yeah, I mean they play at the Rose Bowl, and the big games are sold out with 80,000ish people. But getting there is kind a drag, so I agree, bb is prolly better :)

kbl, i'm actually a member of the colorguard. so i'm a part of the band, but i don't know what it's like to actually march with an instrument! i think bandmom summed it up quite nicely.

i, too, have loved every minute of being with the band. you CANNOT get these experiences anywhere else!

and i maintain that band camp is most rigorous for drums, then flags, then maybe tubas because after all they're 40 lbs and they run with them! but drums/flags do the most intense practices, the most practice outside (not inside pauley), and the most practice apart from band camp hours.

and it's worth every minute of it! :)

also, kbl, the earlier your son auditions for the band, the better. i believe auditions start in may, so don't wait til august!

since when do we chant "F-U Berkeley" who even say Berkeley in terms of sports... they are always Cal or California, UCLA 8 clap is much cooler than some of the normal school chants... are you even a student at UCLA?
BTW during the Cal game, I believe we chanted "OVERRATED!"

Thanks so much for the band feedback, such good information!

I think half the fun is tailgating...at least if you drink. We used to get there 4/5 hours before the game started and grill out, drink, and watch all the other college games across the country. Getting out of the rose bowl deff blows however...

Yes, you did that as well. Only to get killed the next week, if I remember correctly. Oh well, seems to be the story of the pac-10 this year :/
