How are you liking Dayton?

My D has pretty much decided on Dayton (provided she gets in). Freshman: Are you happy with Dayton as your choice? What are the positives and the negatives? Upper classmen: Has Dayton met your expectations both socially and academically?

Would love to know from students (or parents) how the experience is so far?

Thanks to all who respond.

Hmmm… I don’t think there’s much of a Dayton crowd around here, but I have a s h!t ton of experience with this school, so I’ll answer the best I can:

EVERYONE is happy here. For real. It’s absolutely ridiculous, but yet true, and if you come out to campus, you will definitely feel it. From a male perspective, maybe it’s because the women are so attractive, or because the school is run so well, or because it is so interconnected with the community (read the local paper sometime, and I guarantee UD will be mentioned in it. Especially in the business section.) Maybe it’s because the atmosphere is so laid-back and yet the programs are still so good. Maybe it’s just natural midwestern happiness, or because Flyers B-Ball is amazing. I don’t know.

As for someone with experience with the school once leaving, I can say that based on being closely connected to the Cincinnati/Dayton community, grads from this school are grabbed up (WPAFB, P&G, GE aircraft, LexisNexis, local tool and die firms [Dayton is the nation’s second largest tool-and-die center, which actually is a really big deal since it is basically the backbone of manufacturing, US or foreign], Kroger, Chatiqua, Teradata, Caresource, and more are popular local destinations). Also, entrepreneurship in the community here is an easy and good option (heck, it’s what my UD grad father did out in C-Bus where I’m at), so if your daughter has the E-spirit, let her go for it, because the community will support her.

Hope this helps!!! I think that Erin’s Dad may have more info for you.

OHKid Thanks for your comments and help. I really appreciate it . I will look up Erin’s Dad and see what he has to say.

My S is a freshman this year at UD and he is our oldest. He is doing fine. His roommate is not a good match but he is making it work anyway. When asked how he likes it, his reply is “well, I don’t not like it”. That’s as good as it gets I guess. He is turned off by how much partying goes on in the ghetto. Maybe not every night, but all weekend long. This past weekend was parents weekend. My son saw parents drinking right along with kids who were not old enough to drink. What’s up with that? Maybe it won’t matter to some, but UD is definitely a party school. His classes are challenging and he is doing his share of studying. I think he will get a good education and eventually find some like-minded friends.

That’s terrible. That tells me that campus security isn’t doing their job! Will your son have to live in the ghetto next year?

I wondered if I was alone in thinking how wrong the drinking scene is. The “ghetto” is one of the UD owned housing options for Jrs and Srs. He’ll be a sophomore next year, if he goes back, and there are other housing options. If you chat with the administration about campus drinking, they think they are cracking down. But in reality it is more laissez-faire. I don’t think I’m naive, I know drinking happens on all campuses. My son would like to find a place where it is not the norm.

Thanks for the heads-up on this issue. My D is not a partier and is considering Dayton. I’ll need to do some more investigating in that area. Certainly ths students don’t need alcohol to make them “happy”, I hope.

As being the child of an Alumnus and having many friends that have attended the school, regurally and PSEO, I will try and clear up the “social scene” issue as best as I can.

U of Dayton’s atmoshpere party atmosphere is really like that of a state school (which yes, is a little worse than that of the average private school, on par with most Catholic schools, and better than that of places like Ohio U, which is truly ridiculous).

Getting out the six packs and suds’n it up is always an option, like at any other school, but there are many other options on the weekends at the University of Dayton, such as the RecPlex, Intramural Sports, many, many clubs, homework (who woulda guessed?), and community service, since the school places an ENORMOUS focus on community service (yes, it can be fun…really  )
