I was wondering if current students/parents could comment on all of the things they love about UMD. Feel free to compare it to other schools, tell stories, or anything else you feel is necessary. I was there for an overnight visit and it was awesome, but I want to find out as much as I can about it so I can make a good decision if I get accepted.

Not in any particular order…

1) Sports Games. This year was obviously bad for football, and we’re a bit down in basketball (but next year we should be fine; we’re on the way back up), but still I love going to sporting events. Men’s soccer games are also a lot of fun, and the teams is always Top 10.

2) Location to DC. Being able to take a metro into DC any given weekend is an amazing option. There’s so much to do there. It’s also a great place to look for internships.

3) The campus. I think it’s beautiful. It’s especially nice in spring, during fall foliage, and when covered in show.

4) The amount of clubs and such. There’s so many.

5) Campus events. Hoff shows movies sometimes, Stamp holds events and has a bowling alley, clubs host things. Then of course there’s Maryland Day in April.

6) Top programs. Several of the majors have elite schools/programs. One of the reasons I picked UMD was for it’s terrific Journalism school (my major).

I really really like it here. It’s hard to put my finger on why. The location is definitely great, as in it’s very close to DC. I don’t care much for College Park itself but it’s slowly improving. We’ve gotten a lot of new restaurants and bars this semester thanks to some new apartment complexes opening up.

The campus, as Bornin92 said, is beautiful. I don’t think it’s the PRETTIEST I’ve been to but it’s definitely a looker, especially in Spring, Fall and Winter. The blooming flowers and trees, the red and orange leaves, the white powder all make the campus look really nice. One of the best views of Maryland is driving/walking down Regents Drive in front of Memorial Chapel and McKeldin Mall when the sun is setting. B-e-a-utiful.

Definitely a whole lotta clubs. There’s something for everyone, you just gotta find it (which isn’t hard thanks to the First Look Fair and Stampfest). And of course events, being a big state school makes it easy for us to get big acts. Hell we had an early screening of the Muppets movie before it was out in theaters (doesn’t hurt that Jim Henson was an alum!).

I also really love the classes. The only one I haven’t really enjoyed has been statistics and that’s because I found it to be a very dry subject. Most of my professors have been good, some have been great, only one or two have been okay. We’ve got some very strong programs here, including business (my major).

And the students are good too. I don’t know what it is but most folks here seem pretty friendly and courteous. Obviously you’ve got your jerks and creeps but for the most part I like the people here. And, despite there being 27,000 undergraduates, it doesn’t feel like a gigantic school. I run into old classmates all the time.

I never thought I’d be at Maryland actually. It was my safety school, I wasn’t particularly enthused by it when I went on the tour… but through several turns of events I ended up here and I’m actually very glad I’m here. I’m proud to call myself a Terp.

Thanks for the insight guyss
