In my freshman year (2 years ago… I am a 3 year soon to be graduate) I got a C- 79.94% (and my teacher wouldn’t round up). It was for a science class that I soon found out no one had taught in at least 5 years, (in the entire country… thank you charter school!) so I was unable to retake it. It sits there like a sore thumb on my transcript, and I notice it instantly. It was honors, so I suppose that is a minimal plus. I have a 4.16 overall GPA right now, and got a 24 on my ACT with only 5 weekends of studying (pretty decent, but not exceptional). I know I can almost guarantee an acceptance in Sac State (because my GPA is high enough to not even need an ACT score) but my concern is Northridge. That is my first choice, and I am not sure if a C on my transcript is “detrimental”. I am on the track team, and am also apart of NHS and a few other groups in school. I have also applied to Univ. San Diego.
CSU’s do not include Freshman grades in their CSU GPA calculation. As long as you passed the course with a C, you should be fine. The CSU’s are all about the CSU GPA and test scores.
Calculate your CSU GPA and plug it into the Eligibility index (EI) calculation. They accept based on major and EI:
(CSU GPA x 800) + (SAT Math + CR) or (CSU GPA x200) + (ACT compx10).

CSUN has been heavily impacted the last few years and have only taken local applicants. Though impaction continues for the coming 2017-2018 academic year and thereafter, CSUN has eased the supplementary criteria for both non-local area applicants and impacted majors.
Non-local area freshman applicants from the rest of California must meet any CSUN supplementary admission criteria based on the eligibility index. The supplementary eligibility index will be determined by the number and academic characteristics of the non-local freshman applicant pool. This supplementary eligibility index could require non-local area freshman applicants to possess a higher eligibility index than is required for local area applicants. Space permitting, non-local area applicants who achieve the supplementary eligibility index will be admitted until the freshman class is full…
Thank you. With all of the views, I am grateful you responded.
I am attending (hopefully) via WUE, and have chosen a WUE major that isn’t impacted. I’m relieved to know they don’t look at Freshman grades. It is at this time I wished they showed percentages instead of letter grades. However, I am out of state, so hopefully I still have a good chance. Thank you again for your response.
C’s get degrees
I guess that pesky C didn’t matter. I got accepted on Friday.
