How bad do free periods look senior year?

My school has eight periods total, four on each day, and I’m considering taking a free period on both A and B days senior year to ensure that I can maintain my GPA and do my best on college applications. I already have all my credits and have been taking AP courses since sophomore year.

This year, I would have three full year AP courses, three half year concurrent courses (basically like AP), and an honors course. With that schedule, would it look bad to take a free period both days? I’m not trying to get into top schools - just a state university. Getting a good scholarship from the school is my biggest concern.

I’m not entirely sure, but I think that it probably depends a lot on how things usually work at your high school. If almost everyone takes eight classes, taking only six (or seven? not sure from your post) will look less rigorous in comparison. If taking two free periods is a common practice, and you’re getting good grades in your rigorous classes, then I’m sure you’ll be fine. (FYI – seniors at my school are only permitted to take exactly six classes.)

Assuming the U you are considering is in your state then your counselor should be familiar with admissions and what previous students have done.

That would be considered very rigorous.
Note that scholarships (and honors college, which often go hand and hand) depend on high test scores.
