How "bad" does a 770 look to HYPSM compared to an 800?

Hi everyone, so my favorite subject is history and when I got my US History score back and it was 770 (May 2009 test), I was pretty :( I am thinking about taking the SAT Subject test world history in december because it is offered that date along with 2 other subjects. However, I also may need to retake the SAT because I only took it once and my highest ACT score is just 32 (third try and applying to some ivy's). Should I worry about getting the 800 on world history. Not to brag, but I love history and I am almost positive an 800 is very likely with the curve or should I try to bring my SAT score above 2200? I also have a 5 in Euro, US, comp. gov, and a 4 in human geo so the colleges should know I am good at history through those scores right?

Thanks!

P.S. I like world history more this time because I took APUSH last year so I would have to review a bunch of US history material because the US test is more specific while the world test is more general and has a nicer curve.

770 does not look bad at all

I wouldn’t retake your 770 since you would have to waste time reviewing. A 770 certainly does not look bad to elite schools.

To the colleges, a 770 looks just like an 800, as they understand the principle of standard error.

To some of the more strident members of CC, a 770 looks like an opportunity to work harder, retest, and go for a “perfect” score.

From your post, you are interested in what the colleges think, so you’re fine.
