I go to a school with around 210 students..very competitive.
I would say as of now (going into my junior year), I am probably ranked around 23-25 ish with a 97 GPA, so top 15%. I think that translates to a 3.9.

Will my class rank extremely hurt my chances of getting into JHU?

No. It will be taken into consideration, but so will the fact that your school is very competitive and your class is not very large. If your test scores, recommendations, and essays are good, it will not be detrimental.

No. Not extremely. Pick a school that doesn't put as much consideration on class rank, though whatever hurt there could be wouldn't be nearly as bad.

don't sweat on it so much dude
I've known ppl whose class ranks weren't so great (like they were in the 20s and 30s out of class of 300 to 400,
and they were just in regular public schools too)
but they all ended up going to ivy leagues and other goo dcolleges

Um... Colleges prob. look more at actual grades than class rank. Say you get straight B's and C's, and your complaining about your class rank, I think you have more to worry about. With a high GPA, I doubt it will affect you much, especially if you come from the Northeast...

yea im in the same situation you are sort of...except your GPA is certainly better than mine...

i have 3.8 UW / 4.2 W, and 37th out of 500 students in my class...
there are so many people with GPAs in the 4.2~4.3 range...this girl has 4.3 and shes 15th...
i guess it's just bad luck or something...

i'm hoping that me not being in top 5% of my class will not hurt me immensely when applying to schools like UPENN, Northwestern, and Tufts if I am a foreign-born Korean with 1400ish SAT and excel in leadership and community service...

I will write about my physical and mental challenge I've experienced in the wilderness while working in a national park for a month this summer...you think it's unique enough for an Asian to write as a personal statement???

yea, i know this half-Asian guy whose rank was just around 5% (28/600 i believe) and had outstanding ECs and leadership but only got around 1300ish on SAT and got accepted into Brown...

i guess my only hope is truly presenting myself as a diverse applicant and really focus on standing apart from the stereotypical Asians...

imacrazyscientist, I think your class size will have to be considered for sure.

my Korean friend got into JHU wit 20-30th out of 500-600 students and 1300s SAT...
i think his background of moving to U.S. in elementary school and his essays helped him get in, although he chose to attend Emory University...

Everyone here seems to be tormenting you by giving you examples of people who got in to good shools, but did, in fact, have higher rankings than you. Why don't you post your EC's so people can comment a little more thoroughly.

I've done that before, but no one ever comments because the list is basically a laundry list, plus I'm just worried about my class rank because I've looked at alot of statistics of top-notch schools and freshman entering top 10% is always so high. It sucks going to a competitive school. If I went to my regular high school..I'd be like at least top 5.

Sorry to hijack this thread--and if this is out of place don't answer! :)
But my rank sucks at my public HS. Its 17%, because honestly sophmore and freshman year I did NOTHING. Junior year I kicked it up and got a 95.5, wheras sophomore and freshman years i got 91.9 and 92.88. I have always been in honors/AP history, English, and science and will finish with 5 AP's out of10 possible. I know i screwed up, but will this ultimately cost me in the admissions?

I seriously doubt class rank can screw over someone with a 97. Look at it this way, if you're ranked 23rd or so, how much higher can 22 or even 15 be than you?

thats how tight competition is at my school by decimals...usuall top ten in my highschool is about from a 98-100 if you have like a 90 that almost automatically puts you only in the 50th percentile...you have to apply to get into my school..so all the really smart people get recruited..who'd normally be 1st or 2nd at their home school
