I know it's relatively low, but I've had rigorous schedules and my weighted GPA is 4.4, plus my high school is very competitive and awarded at state levels. I'm currently a junior; I got a 33 on the ACT's, which is on the higher end of scores for GU, so could that make up for the lower GPA? My EC's are strong, I'm a minority, I can get great recommendation letters, and hopefully the essay goes well...plus I'm taking around 5-6 SAT subject tests this year which I believe I can get over 700+ on at least 3

I don't think the GPA properly reflects my abilities as a student, as I used to be get straight A's, but I have been going through severe depression for the past year which has really affected my motivation/effort. I don't want to throw it out at universities as an excuse and I definitely don't want to burden my family by bringing it up, but they keep telling me that the 3.7 will ruin my chances at getting anywhere. I know Georgetown is a reach regardless, and that I still have time to bring up my GPA, but it's my first choice and I'm wondering if I still have a solid shot, or ruined things already with it.

Any insight would be super appreciated.. thank you so much!

A 3.7 GPA is not AWFUL, but for a college like Georgetown it could definitely hurt your chances.Your ACT is very good, and will definitely help, as will your SAT subject tests (if you do get above a 700 on all of them).

If you feel like it is necessary, you should tell them that you went through depression. If it was self-diagnosed, though, I would probably refrain from mentioning it, as TONS of students use depression and illness to lie about bad grades.

Don’t think that you don’t have a shot. If you get good recs and write good essays, you still may get in.

It’s self diagnosed, but I’ve always lied on the depression screenings they give at the doctor’s office. If I’m completely honest the next time I go, I could get a diagnosis for sure but I’m worried with exactly how honest I should be, seeing as revealing anything about suicide/self-harm will cause unnecessary issues. I definitely don’t want to throw excuses at them; that would be a last resort if my chances are severely diminished by the GPA, so I’ll just try to boost my EC’s and grades as much as possible.

Thank you for your answer, it was really reassuring to know not all hope is lost with GU

My daughters classmate got into Georgetown with a 3.8 UW and 32 ACT so certainly not impossible. She graduated from a private school in north shore suburb of Chicago.
