How bad is a 3.8 GPA?

How bad is a 3.8 GPA with all honors or APs for top-tier colleges (Ivys, etc.)?

It’s not optimal. Most accepted will have 3.9+, but you’re not out of the running by any means. It’s definitely safe to apply.

so bad you can’t even get into community college.

^hahaha, i love it. We cant give you an accurate portrayal of chances based upon a mere GPA…especially for Ivy’s. Come on. They dont have a <4.0 bin. Or should go into detail?

Try looking at the Common Data Set, section C. Sometimes schools list the breakdown of GPAs of their incoming freshman class. The table showing the weighting of admission criteria is often really useful.
A 3.8 is OK but everything else also needs to be top-notch. Even then the admission rates at Ivys are mostly below 10% and the majority of applicants are excellent candidates. So just be realistic about your odds of admission and put a lot of effort into finding “matches” and safeties that you really like.
