I just took my first AP Exam (Euro). I read through the whole Princeton review book the night before, and that's it. I didn't do as much prep. as I should have. I don't feel comfortable saying I got a 4 or 5. I think I got a 3, verging on 2. Maybe it's just the nerves, I don't know. I'm looking to apply to HYP, how bad does a 3 look?

You can always take a history SAT II which, assuming you do well, would cover up the AP. Adcoms don’t rely on the AP grades much when considering a student, they can help you but not really hurt you. HYP require higher AP scores for credit though, just so you’re aware.

Ap is more for credit, not much so for admission.

a 3 basically means the end of life as you know it.

A 3 is not what they are looking for. Study harder for your next three APs. Also, there are a lot of great schools out there – don’t get hung up on any one (or three).

A 3 is not bad, but it’s not excellent either. I don’t think it’ll hurt or help. I don’t think AP scores are really that important at all in admissions. The required standardized tests are more important.

3’s are horrible. none of my schools even look at them, it’s a waste of $50, and if it’s US history like me, it pushes your GPA down while giving you 50+ pages of notes a week.

If you invest a year in taking an AP Class, but only come up with a 3, you (and the class) look pretty bad.

Kiss goodbye hope of waving washout freshman classes - you know that 300 person chemistry classes that are insanely hard to reduce the number of engineering students and crush your soul.

Don’t despair. A 3 is not bad. At a minimum, it keeps you eligible for AP Scholar. [AP: Scholar Awards](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>Qualifying for an AP Scholar Award – AP Students | College Board)

:)

Wow, there are so many threads asking “will a 3 keep me out of top colleges”, and the answer is no.

Well I don’t really know what I actually got. My nerves are telling me that a 3 is in my future, but I don’t know if that’s because I’m nervous or what. I finished the test with 30 min. to spare on the multiple choice and and about an hour to spare on the essay. I feel like I rushed through it. I got the highest grade in that class and got the AP Student of the Year award, so I’m not worried about looking bad in high school, I just don’t want to look bad to prospective colleges.

You know you can get your score now right?
A three isn’t terrible and it will get you credit at many schools including many state universities. Also, I would keep in mind that number doesn’t say what you learned this year. Anyone can have an off day or bad luck in the questions.

What do you mean we can get our scores now???

You can get your scores by phone now but it costs $8. For the original question, a 3 will not keep out of top schools. Admission offices put very little weight on AP scores for admissions purposes though a 3 may mean you won’t get credit for that class at some higher institutions.

if im not wrong, you don’t have to report all ur ap scores on ur application and you can cancel.

to put it in perspective, a 3 will rarely have a huge impact on admissions, but for example in Ohio, a three on an Ap test will give you credit at any public college or university. On the other hand, the Ivy League would laugh if you asked for credit.
