Am I just doomed in college admissions if I get a D? I'm doing horrible in Honors Precalculus, and seriously, I see no hope at all. I just don't understand math, no matter how much extra help i try to get. I'm probably going to get a D for the semester. I've gotten all As otherwise save a couple of Bs (in math classes as well). How much will this D affect me in college admissions? I'm expecting all As in my other classes.

Well I would probably drop down to an easier class if possible, cause even like a B in an easier class would be better than a D I suppose. It also depends on what colleges you’re applying to, cause I mean for like Harvard that would be a death knell, but for other colleges not necessarily.

I don’t mean to sound like a jerk, but yeah I’d say a D is reasonably bad.

What schools are you applying to?

I’m not sure yet, but I’m mainly looking at LACs. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if I had to go to my state flagship, but I’d vastly prefer an LAC because of the learning environment. These include Middlebury, Macalester, Carleton, and the like. I know I’m being too optimistic, all reaches… sigh

Can you transfer to an easier level math class? The D may really come back to haunt you on those LAC applications, so try, try, try to transfer, or wrangle a C somehow.

@fauve- Nope, I can’t switch to the on-level class right now. I’m going to switch next semester though. If I worked really hard, I could probably make a C. And if I worked insanely hard and MASTERED the concepts, I could possibly make a B for the semester. Just to be realistic though, I’m expecting a C… would that make a huge difference? Especially if I have an upward trend, like making a B or an A for second semester of Precalc?

One C would be fine, I bet, with all you other good grades, and an upward trend. I think only a D would raise serious doubts and be a deal-breaker. Glad to hear you can switch for next semester. Best of luck!
