how bad is a W?

hi guys...i am a computer science major, and I was asked to take two computer engineering classes(digital systems and computer architecture). In computer architecture, i got a C+ the first time I took it. So, I decided to retake the class to better my grades as that C+ affected my other grades.

However, next semester, I didn't do really well in the first midterm, so I dropped out of the class and ended up getting a "W". I ended up with a 3.91/4.0 that semester with 4 other classes(computer sciences and maths)

How bad will a W look on transcript when you apply to grad school?

I don't think that one "W" will make a difference, assuming that the rest of your grades are strong, especially in your field. I base my statement on my S's case. He took a "W" in one course, although it was not in his major, and he will be attending a very highly ranked grad school next fall.

One "W" doesn't mean anything. A bunch of undergraduates will take at least one of them during their scholastic career. The thing you need to be avoiding is having something like 12 "W." If that happens, your 3.85 GPA is taken with a HUUUUGE grain of salt by admissions boards.

i had two Ws, one in my major (retaking it now) and the other in an unrelated area......I still ended up getting into all my schools because my grades were okay and I had great lors....I wouldn't worry about that too much...a person can get a W for several reasons and i think admissions people recognize that, especially if you do okay in your other classes.
