I am currently a junior and have taken Spanish for the last three years. If I dont take spanish next year in favor of a class like business law, how bad would that look on an application for a top school.
Which schools are you looking at? Top schools want to see 4 years of a FL.
What level of Spanish are you at right now? Having 3 years of world language is fine for most schools. Only some top schools that recommend 4 years. Also, they mostly count the level of language not exact year.
You’re probably fine if you take AP or at least the exam. I’m not taking spanish my senior year, but I am taking it this summer at a community college. I hope that’ll be fine
Based on the user name I’m assuming MIT and the like. For MIT, it would not be an issue. However, MIT is also very difficult to get into.
From OP’s other posts, he’s also looking at Harvard and Princeton, which, of course, are also highly selective. Therefore, I agreed that completing level 4 should be the strategy.
Business Law is not a core class whereas Foreign Language is. If you want to have a shot at HYPM, take the foreign language. Obviously, that’s assuming you’re getting at least a B+ in the class and preferably an A.
Look at the requirements/recommendations of a number of schools you are interested in (can be found online usually) and decide for yourself. In general BLaw will not carry the same weight as a fourth year of foreign language.
I doubt business law in HS will carry much weight at all.
I am also a junior and will be dropping a foreign language next year. I took 4 years of Chinese but the first year was in middle school. I had to sign a paper saying that it will be used for high school foreign language credit. Will the colleges count that too? Or will only 3 years that I took in high school count?
Colleges are looking for the level you achieve. If you get to L4 or AP then you’re good.
@Zavalon Completion of level 4 in most instances counts as 4 years. In the future, please do not hijack another person’s discussion; it is considered rude to the original poster. Start your own discussion with the big orange button on top.
@skieurope Thanks for the answer and sorry for hijacking another person’s discussion. I’m new to college confidential and since it was a “discussion” I thought it was ok to ask my own question related to the discussion. I’ll keep that in mind next time.
