How bad is grade deflation at Boston U for pre-med classes?

I may need to maintain a 3.5 GPA in my science courses to have a good shot at applying for med programs.

What % of class gets an ‘A’ in the lower udergraduate classes? (like Chem 1010, etc.)

What % of class gets an ‘A’ in the upper udergraduate classes (like Organic Chem or Biochem etc.)?

Thanks very much

i was premed at BU and I thought my grades were brought down slightly, and unfairly, because they had to be graded on a curve. However this is how universities are supposed to grade, but most don’t and have high rates of grade inflation. So whether this is normal grading, or deflation, I don’t really know. But I got into an early acceptance program to BUSM, and my grades for premed were something like this: B+/A- for the inorganic and organic chem classes, B+/A- for bio, and straight A’s for physics. My science GPA was also brought up by upper level courses and calculus as I was really good in math.

So it is definitely possible to do well, but you just have to be in that upper tier and willing to work really hard. The premed classes really are the weed-out classes, so you will see many fewer premeds after freshman and sophomore year. But like I said, if you’re willing to work hard and get it done then you’ll be fine. But, if you’re anything like me, there will be occasions where you expect your grade to be an A and you’ll come out with an A-. Maybe I was incorrect in my grade calculation? Hope this helps, feel free to PM me if you have any other specific questions.

Great info! Thanks so much

Hi, Ali. I hope med school is going well.

I backed off this board because I don’t have any kids there any more. My last one is living in LA free-lancing in film.

I think we all miss you, Lergnom!

Thanks, Lerg. Med school is going well, except that boards are approaching in a few months (major stress!!!), but otherwise still lovin’ BU. Hope your kids are doing great!

Thanks, Bailey and Ali.

My remaining child in school is at Rochester so I post there. They have less snow than us this winter. Syracuse, on the other hand, which is only 90 miles, had something like 6 feet of snow just in December.

Possible good news for high schoolers: last Boston winter this bad was 6 years ago so you may pass through BU without getting slammed like this.

I value your input. I was offered an interview spot for the 7-year BS/MD track at BU. I am coming there on Feb 11th for the interview. Hoping that I do not get burried in snow. LOL!

I have few other BS/MD choices on my list. I am looking for some merit aid to cover most of my tuition from any given school. That will make a whole lot of difference. Please tell me how do you like the med school. Are there any scholarships for the med students? The cost looks very steep at BU.

Thanks
