Well tuition, room and board goes up too. So it may be relative.

My EFC is $0
Income bracket 25k
NYU expected me to take out loans of 28000/year. It was by far the worst FA package I got… Tulane and Loyola Chicago gave me loans of 14k/year. USC is 10k/year.

I end up going to NYU.

They gave me $23450 in scholarships/grants.
It is not the most I got from a school, but in the range.
The most I got is $28000 (U of Richmond), least is $16800 (U of Michigan).
I like NYC but the decision was still hard.

My plan to pay off the debts:
- Build p-time work experience/paid internships while in school/summers. I need that experiences anyhow to get something decent after graduation.
- Find a good pay job in I-bank to pay for the remaining debt.

Just sent in my deposit. Good luck to everyone.

Sabrina - Since Tulane has a no-loan tuition package for families making under $70,000 or something like that, why did you not get that?

Also, Sabrina, sounds like NYU gives you close to $30,000 free money each year. That’s more than many of us got and covers 3/4 of their tuition and fees. Depends on your major, NYU degree can land you a job in NYC with debt forgiving program or pay it off with a good pay job.

NYU gave me a package consisting of only loans… which kills me, even though I have an EFC of 70000. I guess I’ll consider UofT, it’ll only cost me 20 grand for 4 years, and it’s ranked 20th in the world.
Oh canadaaaa

As bad as their financial aid usually is, they’re giving me an 18,000 merit scholarship, and i only had a 1900 on my SAT. I didn’t even think I was getting in, let alone get a large scholarship. I know its technically not “financial aid”, but still. What surprised me is that I got a better package from NYU than from Cornell, which basically sealed the deal on my decision of where I’m going…

Yeah intrestingly I got more money from NYU than other schools lol…and I’m going to Stern next year so yay :)

fallenchemist:I really don’t know. I expected Tulane’s aid to be better… but it’s definitely about 14k of loans/year, some of them federal and some not

elan_xu: Yeah, they did give me more than a lot of people got. It was a tough decision to turn down the New York oppurtunity… and I was seriously considering just going to NYU and going into major debt. But my parents wouldn’t give me the deposit for NYU, so I’m headed to USC

a lot of people I know whose parents are middle class get the standard pell grants. Since they are commuting students, this means 32-36k for the year subtracted by 4-5k for the grants. So typically the average student from NYC who attend NYU and receive no grants while commuting to classes pay 14-16k per semester.

Thanks to the size of our student body, irrational propensity for expansion, and poor endowment, NYU’s FA is awful. Maybe we cut the size of our student body and focused on the Washington Square campus instead of attempting to take over the entire city and world, we might have better FA. We’re trying to compete with Ivies, but they all have great financial aid, relatively small student bodies, and therefore have happy students… Maybe NYU should take a hint and save up… but oh well. I really hope John Sexton knows what he’s doing.

This may sound stupid…but did you guys have to apply for the loans NYU offers, like direct unsub safford prom note, direct PLUS promissionary note…etc, besides filling out the FAFSA form?..im so confused with how this whole thing works…i filled out my FAFSA form but on my netPartner account it says they did not recieve “Diresct subsized stafford prom not”…etc…what does that mean? I cant call the office cuz theire closed so i need helppp! ahhh

Relax, they will send you all the information and paperwork you will need to file. When you first file for a Stafford loan, sub and un sub, you have to sign a promissary note that will be good for 10 years. If you have any questions you can call Monday. its all good.

okay so your bassically saying i didnt have to fill out anything besides FAFSA untill they give me my award package?

YES!!! You can always email the FA office too.

nyu gave me the WORST package ever.
University of Richmond made my parents responsible for 4,000 a a year (plus a few thousand in loans for me)
Boston College 8,000-10,000 (plus a few thousand in loans for me)
College of William and Mary 16,000 (plus a few thousand in loans for me)
THEN NYU ASKS MY PARENTS TO TAKE OUT A 34,000 DOLLAR LOAN EVERY YEAR, plus me taking out 4,000…
yeah, i love nyu but it isnt happening

Why not apply to NYU Early Decision if you are financially in need? I understood that you could reject the financial package they gave you if you couldn’t afford it and they would either renegotiate or allow you out of the binding contract.
