<p>How bad is the are around Johns Hopkins? I heard its really bad, would I ever be able to leave campus? If the area is bad, is the campus big, and whats there to do on campus?, I don't want to be stuck on a 150 acre area for 4 years.....</p>

<p>If you could chance me for Johns Hopkins that'd be great too...........I want to major in Economics and do Pre-Med, I want to look at policies in the healthcare field, and try to make it more efficient. Would doing pre-med hurt my chances?</p>

<p>For starters… ive been to JHU for summer program and the area isnt as bad as they say XD… its actually really cool… there are “bad” parts to the the area… but you really shouldnt be there anyways, unless your looking for trouble… there is enough there to do for atleast the first year… although all four years im not sure XD… but how many cities can you go to and have something new to do for four years XD… </p>

<p>As of chances… well i hate chances becuase they mean nothing… and if your ED its already been decided and if your RD well the admission offers have got to like what they see…</p>

<p>as for the whole premed issue… well just relax… get in and JHU has enough consuling that youll know exactly where your going and as far as i know it really wont hurt your chances… but dont worry JHU will help you with that you just get in XD</p>

<p>and residency really doesnt help the decision is not made by the regional admission offer alone… its reviwed by an entire board…</p>

<p>going back to chances… well everything you have seems average… but JHU is not that big on tests scores… they are more focused on the school courses and grades (which seems like you might have slacked a bit)… but more importantly its the essays… they carry the most weight as ive heard…</p>

<p>further more its all up to the admission offers… they have to like what they see and you have to find a way to present this information to them in a way that makes you stand out… its all up to you</p>

<p>I also hope getting verification/recommendations doesnt mean your sending in more than maximum 4 recommendations XD when i was there everyone said over and over again… please dont over do it … they always read throuugh everything… and if oyu have too many recommendations… they take it as a sign of you lacking something… believe in yourself and send the most important recommendations… they dont like too many of it… it might (will) hurt your chances…</p>

<p>ANYWAYS GL to and hope you get in XD (overall the truth is IN MY OPINION you have a good chance of getting in… just remember to write nice essays… present yourself well… and dont over do it)</p>

<p>Texas will help you out a bit…and your community service is impressive, your sat scores may be a tad lower than wanted, but probably good enough…the biggest thing I see that would hurt your chances is your class rank, but seeing that I know nothing about your school (you make it seem like it is competitive), who knows</p>

<p>If you’re going ED, which I’m sure you are, you’ve got a legitimate shot, somewhere around the 1/3-45% range maybe?</p>

<p>RD you can apply couple of places… somewhere will accept you and i think your career goals are kinda cooll… although i doubt admission really cares… and your rank is a little low… but you seem to have enough to make up for it.</p>

<p>While I couldn’t tell you how accurate this is, but our counselors seem to tell the kids that the thicker the file, the thicker the kid… and this would not be a good thing. so, I would be careful about a lot of excess paperwork beyond what the school is asking for. Somewhere else on this board, I think admissions has said that they have something like 6 minutes per application, so I don’t think they want to be flipping through a bunch of extraneous information.</p>

<p>I think that most people who say “Johns Hopkins is in a bad area” either:(1) are referring to the Hospital–not the Homewood campus; or (2) have never been to the Homewood campus; or (3) have never left their suburban bubble. Charles Village has just been ranked as one of the 10 nicest urban residential neighborhoods in the country. Other adjacent neighborhoods are mostly very nice (the exception being Remington, to the south, which is a little sketchy but not bad by Baltimore standards).</p>

<p>The Homewood campus, while very much a park-like oasis, is in an urban environment–which means that you have to use some judgment such as avoiding walking alone off campus by yourself at 3 a.m. This is true of any urban area in this country. Each school publishes crime statistics–and if you compare Hopkins with other urban schools–you will see that there is nothing to be unduly alarmed about. No, it is not Hanover N.H. (Dartmouth) or Princeton, N.J.–but I think it is safer than the areas around Yale, Penn, Columbia, or Duke. Brown would be comparable.</p>

<p>Admittedly, the area near Hopkins can be somewhat sketchy, but there are still a ton of places nearby. Inner Harbor is close, and pretty nice. And, of course, there’s the escort vans to take you places after dark where you wouldn’t want to walk.</p>

<p>This past spring my oldest and I did the rounds of the elite northeastern urban schools. The area around Hopkins was not terrible but certainly not the best part of Baltimore by any means. One edge of campus has a nice strip of shops and stores clearly catering to the students … other than that there is not a lot right next to campus. Baltimore itself is nice mid-sized city with some very interesting neighborhoods.</p>

<p>My opinion on the urban schools would go something like this …</p>

<ul>
<li>Columbia, Barnard, NYU - walk out of your building into Manhattan</li>
<li>MIT and Harvard - walk out of your buidling into Cambridge (funky neighbor of Boston)</li>
<li>Yale - lots of student friendly stuff right off campus … overall neighborhood right off campusnot the best … New Haven interesting small city</li>
<li>Brown - some stuff right off campus … neighborhood next to campus OK … Providence OK small city</li>
<li>UChicago - very little right off campus … neighborhood right next to campus OK … next ring pretty sketchy … very close to downdown Chicago</li>
<li>UPenn and Hopkins … very little right off campus … neighborhood right off campus not the best … host city very interesting mid-sized city</li>

<p>I’m a freshman at Hopkins and I have to say the area around here really isn’t bad at all. Me and my friends go out a lot here in the area around campus and we never feel unsafe, mainly because there are SO many students around along with campus security. Without a car, I stay mainly on the few blocks around campus which have some good resources:</p>

<p>Unimini/Subway - Open 24/7 unimini is our local mini mart, 7/11 whatever you may call it. These two are bustling almost every night with JHU students, great place to go for a midnight snack or even just to bump into people. It’s literally one block down from where you walk off of the official campus, I’ve walked here alone at 2 AM (I’m a girl) and passed kids doing it, if it’s a weekend there are tons of people around here at this time anyways (you have to pass charles commons the sophomore dorm) so it’s very safe. There’s also hopcops just standing on the streets all around campus.</p>

<p>Cloud 9 - If you’re a girl (or guy I suppose) this is a great clothing shop. I bought a nice jacket here on my first day, a purse, some bracelets, a couple shirts…it’s really cool actually I love the clothes here, great for that random day when you get out of class and need some retail therapy.</p>

<p>Chipotle - Mexican food, always packed, always delicious.
Starbucks/eddie’s market (supermarket)/bank of america/COLDSTONE (ice cream mmm)
Really cute/delicious cafe called Carma’s Cafe, kind of hidden but definitely worth going to.</p>

<p>Tamber’s - GREAT indian food / diner food (burgers, fries, etc.)</p>

<p>Then there’s some nightlife around here to, The Den, a sort of dance club-ish place, PJ’s which is a pub, there’s also Bert’s and Charles Village Pub which are a little farther (one or two more blocks down) but again, safe to walk to and if you’re into them could definitely be fun.</p>

<p>But if you’re worried about safety when you want to go a little farther than the places right around campus (there are some great restaurants/shops) we have this escort van service that runs from 5 pm - 3 am, where you just call and tell them where you are a van comes and picks you up and takes you where you want to go. For the evening this is great if you want to go get dinner a little off campus, and if you are out very late or in some cases very early and don’t feel safe walking home or if you are alone or something you can call them for that reason to.</p>

<p>Also there is a collegetown shuttle that takes you from JHU to all the colleges around here (loyola, towson, goucher, etc.) or to places like the Towson Town Center (HUGE mall + movie theater + restaurants) or the Inner Harbor (really nice area downtown, on the water obviously, shopping here + restaurants + events and stuff).</p>

<p>Regarding the safety of the neighborhood surrounding the Homewood campus, I visited the campus this past summer with my son and, based upon postings here and elsewhere, I expected a pretty rough urban neighborhood. I was pleasantly surprised. First, the campus itself is simply beautiful and defined. When your on campus, you really are on the campus and not intermixed among university and non-university buildings. It’s simply a lovely campus. Second, the surrounding neighborhood is NOT the rough, threatening environment I expected based upon some posted descriptions (and that certain TV show I loved). The surrounding area struck me as a rather charming urban environment. Of course, there are risks and I wouldn’t wander alone at night, but it’s simply an urban environment. I raised my kid to understand how to conduct himself in that setting. If you want zero risks, go to Northfield, MN (pop. 15,000), but if you are willing to live like most urban people, the neighborhood around the Homewood campus seemed, well, rather routine urban. I’d have no second thoughts about allowing my kid to go to school there. Based upon what I saw, the safety of the Homewood campus should not be a deciding factor in attending Hopkins.</p>

<p>not sure if you already applied, but if i were you i would apply as a “public health studies - social sciences emphasis” major. that seems to better fit your goal of economics, healthcare policy, etc. look it up - it is a very cool field.</p>

<p>I don’t know about negative light, but while I think that the question is asked to see if you’ve considered some of the things a school has to offer, I also think that very very few 18 year olds really know precisely what they intend to major in and of those that do, I would imagine there are more than a few of them who then change their mind as well.</p>

<p>Having a passion for what you intend to study is probably more effective than knowing exactly how you might combine those into an effective major at any particular school. Perhaps knowing more about Health Services Sciences might have been a good thing to know about I don’t think something like that would make or break your application.</p>
