basically, i am a HS junior considering this school and i was wondering how the current CA budget crisis is affecting HSU (more so whether the crisis is affecting the availability of class sections and the quality of education)

Please verify all this information - but it looks like (so far) there are less class offerings next fall. For example, so far, I did not see 3rd year German classes being offered at Humboldt for fall 2010 (whereas they had it last year). What does that mean? Students are unable to actually major in German, though can take the first two years of language study. It may be they will offer 3rd year German every-other-year, etc. Who knows - so ask!

I have heard that USC has eliminated its German major entirely. Santa Clara University’s German offerings have shrunk back. I’m not even certain SFSU is offering any 3rd year German anymore. German isn’t a popular major and we are starting to see it get canabalized. I just offer that as a window into what is likely happening to a variety of smaller majors across the entire state.

I fully expect to see this shrinkage hit easy targets like German first – but one will see cut backs in basic majors, too, like English. I can point to several colleges in CA that have shrunk back the number of classes offered for English Lit.

My guess is that all the CSUs are having to squeeze all their programs – and instead offer primarily boiler plate classes that lots of kids need, and offer less specialty/novelty classes within a major. Small and less popular majors may disappear completely over the next few years. I know at the CA Community College level entire departments are being wiped out (Journalism, for example).

Still, I think the quality of education at most CA colleges is still there - just less class offerings everywhere - private AND public, elite and middle of the road.

If you love Humboldt, go to it. The other CSUs are also being hit and the privates are starting to get squeezed now, too.

Humboldt eliminated the German major back in 2008 when my son graduated.

Thanks for the update on the German department major.

I heard their Nursing department is being eliminated too…

I know that there’s a lot of protests going on over the possible elimation of the nursing program.
