how bad is the drinking

I've heard that dartmouth social life is dominated by frats and drinking. To what extent is this true?

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~evalres/rbs98.shtml

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~evalres/rbs97alc.shtml

Wow. That is kind of depressing, actually. I guess because of all the propaganda spewed by administration that the drinking/frats weren't a big deal, and the fact that I was hosted in East Wheelock during Dimensions, I definitely got the impression that it wasn't quite that prevalent. What is Dartmouth's policy for underage drinkers? Apparently they don't really care? What measures do they take to catch kids, and what type of punishment is given out if someone is caught?

You have to put it in the context of a national issue:

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/cas/Documents/monograph_2000/cas_mono_2000.pdf

wanna be cool? gotta drink....no i'm joking lol....it didn't seem like drinking was all over the place at dimensions.

Honestly guys, drinking is the #1 activity pretty much on every college campus for the majority of students. Non-drinkers hav plenty of other options, like movies, outdoor stuff, cultural events, etc. But know most weekends a majority of your friends will be out at parties.

I just want to point out the bias in the title of this thread...personally, I think it should be worded "How GOOD is the drinking?"

(ha ha, I just had to throw that in)

Welcome to college, people drink. We're the home of Animal House and that drinking continues.

The thing you have to keep in mind is that Dartmouth is an accepting community in all aspects. You will NEVER find yourself in a situation where you have to drink. You can join a frat and never drink if you don't feel comfortable (of course this differs from frat to frat, but most are very open). You can frequent frats and not drink. You can even play pong with water if you want to engage in frat activities.
Some people never go to frats. I found myself leading some 06s around the frat scene even though I'm an 08. People on my floor don't rage at all and still LOVE the college.

So to answer your question: the drinking is as good or bad as you want it to be. If you are morally opposed to drinking or you find that you hate being around people who drink, this probably isn't the place for you, nor is any college environment. But if you're willing to have the "do whatever you want as long as it doesn't hurt me" mentality, it's fine.

props to appro on his comment.

I don't believe in drinking before marriage.
