My daughter, born and raised in Southern California, has applied to Medill School of Journalism. I was raised in Ohio and remember the winters there as being pretty bad, but now we've got global warming. How bad are the winters in Evanston?

Well, as a Chicago native, I can tell you this much...

The second week of this month, temperatures were either all in the single digits or below zero. In fact, I remember school getting canceled that Monday because it was 11 degrees below (add the windshield, and it felt like -20 degrees).

The following Monday there was a huge snow storm, and I got another day off from school.

It's crazy weather, but I'm used to it. We don't really have a spring/fall, and even if we do, it's very short. A majority of the year is either extremely hot or cold.

I have relatives in San Diego who occasionally come to visit my family in Chicago. If it happens to be winter, they tend to be extremely sensitive to the cold, for obvious reasons. Just make sure that you have adequate clothing - turtlenecks, sweaters, a down jacket, warm socks - and winters aren't so bad. It's only when you're poorly dressed that you really start to curse Chicago weather.

It's really cold here but I know many students from California who are doing just fine. Cold should not be a factor.

i'm a cali kid, and the weather isn't too bad, it's just the monotony that gets to me. When it snows, it snows for a while and then it sits and is dreary. Which i find rather boring

right at the moment, it's hailing bb-sized ice things, and it hurts to walk and its rather windy. however, temperature is decent. Although its really uncomforatble weather, it's exciting cos somthing's happening. Come visit if its a huge concern.

the weather really shouldn't be a factor, even for kids from cali. tons of my friends are from california or other warm states, and they're fine. yeah, the winter weather sucks, but i have a feeling spring is going to be beautiful.

Agreed with what other poster have said. I'm from Hawaii, and am still here after almost 2 years. It's not an easy adjustment, but (in most cases) it's no reason to discount the school. And spring really is incredible.
