How bad is your vision?

Hello,

I was curious after reading the other Vision thread about how bad your vision must be to have to get a waiver. Anyone know? I hear everyone talking about 20/40 and 20/20, etc, but I don't know what my vision is. All I know, is that on the side of my contact boxes, it says -4.00. Can this be translated into 20/x? Thanks!

Dash-9, I too wear contacts and am a -4.00 and -4.25 and can say that I know for a fact that I am wayyyyyyy off 20/40 and was no where near aviator standards, but was NFO eligible.
I'm no optometrist, but I would hazard a guess that you will fall under the eye waiver requirement.

Ahh, ok that's what I thought, thanks for the quick response.

Dash--

My daughter is 20/350 in both eyes or -3.50. When she went to her DODMERB physical, they classified her as 20/400--right at the limit of waiverable.

Start eating carrots and doing eye exercises, just to make sure...lol. :)

Good luck.

haha, you got a laugh outu me. I ordered some eye exercises a couple days ago as a matter of fact. I have...also been eating many carrots, so it made me laugh when you said those two things..If I just get it <-3.5, or I guess it would be >-3.5...lol, then I'm set. Thanks again for the help.

OH, and I should limit my computer time as well, I've heard looking at computer monitors is bad for your eyes...can anyone confirm?

yea computers is how my eyes got bad in the first place. Everybody else in my family has perfect vision but im on the computer most often. Im going to look into those eye excercises though...

I'm -3.00 both eyes, 20/200 vision. I need a vision waiver for USNA but I was Navigator Qualified for USAFA.

20/400 or -6.00 is the limit. They listed me as 20/400, but I am only -3.00 in both eyes. I also just found out today that as long as you are not above that it is an automatic waiver, even if it comes back as a disqualification.

just cherish the thought of the bcg's during plebe summer. my roomate took hers off at the end...and one of our cadre told her she was in the wrong company, he didn't even recognize her.

death by happiness,
You mentioned that as long as your eyesight is not worse than the limit, it's an automatic waiver. I have heard something similar as well. Does this mean that the thing about only 30-35% of the candidates receiving vision waivers is a false statement? Or is it that those under the limit receive it automatically, and those above it compete for it?

Thanks

My vision is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad.......

HOW BAD IS IT?

It's so bad, the Bosun of the Watch had to install a white pole in front of my ship whenever I took the conn.

(10 points to whoever names the copied game show! ;))

i think that you are automatically CONSIDERED for the waiver if you fall within the limits, and the more competitive you are, the more likely you are to get it. i got one for my eyes (20/300 and 20/400). i think that the 35% rule is still in effect, but that since they changed "qualifying" from 20/20 to 20/40, this opens up a whole new bunch of spots within that "35%" to those of us who are visually challenged, spots that would have previously been occupied by those who fell in the 20/20-20/40 range and still needed waivers. those people don't need waivers anymore. correct me if i'm wrong, but this is what i've been led to believe.

You got it boston! The rule is still in effect, it's just that the parameters have changed.

haha well it makes more sense the way you put it, cadetmom!

Does anyone know how many people who had vision between 20/20 and 20/40 occupied the waiver slots last year? Because I wouldn't see that as a big advantage for us poor-vision people unless a significant percent of the waiver pool were people with vision between 20/20 and 20/40.

Yeah, it's automatic if you fall within the quota, that being (I think) 40%. The Academy has an exact number of people it can let in with bad vision, so if you're competetive you'll get in. It's not so much a waiver as them letting you be one of the 40%. I guess the only thing is that you're chances are a little less than someone with good eyes.
