How bad of a disadvantage is it if i did not submit a graded paper

as a follow up question, have people gotten in even without submitting a graded paper?

as another follow up question, do you think the common app essay and the supplements (4 in total) will be enough to substitute for what they would understand about my writing skills from a graded paper?

The graded paper is a way to see the applicant’s writing skill. At the same time it is a way to see how the high school evaluates and develops the applicant’s writing skill. So a good graded paper would help. I heard when the very selective schools like Brown say ‘optional’, it is not really optional. However, if you feel your essays are pretty strong, nothing will prevent you from being admitted.

I’ve never really researched to see the importance of the paper and I’m currently waiting on my decision from Brown so I can’t tell you anything there.

I did submit the paper, only because writing is my strong suit, and I agree with @singingbear that usually when something is “optional” it’s usually expected of you anyways. So in comparison to those who did, you are at a disadvantage.

I submitted it because I had nothing to lose- it was a win/win situation for me, but I think if your voice was clear in your common app and they were able to gauge your writing abilities through the short responses, you should be ok in terms of it not negatively affecting you.

You should definitely update on your decision when they come out, in the case that you do get in, you can share with others.

did you submit the SAT/ACT writing section? because Brown states that if you did, the graded paper is not necessary

Isn’t the graded paper requirement new this year? They’re probably still debating how to weigh it.
