How bad of an idea is it if i email new paltz about my reasoning of my poor act score?

I have a 3.5 gpa- my school doesn’t offer aps so i never had the chance and i got a 21 on my act. i was obviously devistated but my whole school career was screwed ip. i’m just learning algebra 2 and geometry and i’m a senior… long story a lot of hospitalizations made me really behind. I also have terrible terrible test anxiety. a lot of the questions on the act i had to randomly bubble because i literally had no time left. It was also my first time i ever took a standardized test and the last because the next one is in march and that is too late for fall 2018 admissions. i really really want to go to new paltz and with my act it really messes everything up. do you think i should email them saying they are my top choice and trying to explain my situation without giving excuses? if not do you think there is anything i can do? thanks.

This is something to talk to your guidance counselor about! (Hurry before break starts). Can your counselor write a letter explaining these things? That way it’s more “official” and more likely to be acknowledged in your file.

my counselor said she thought it was honestly a bad idea because it would highlight it. Idk though

I would posit that it will be impossible for you to explain without it sounding like your making excuses.

Better her explaining it than you, though. There’s no hiding from the score, so it’s not like having her talk about your struggles will “highlight” your score. AO’s will see it anyway.
