So i struggled alot this first semester of college. I had a couple stretches of depression, got sick a lot and ended up pulling only a 2.3 for my first 13 hours of credit. How bad of shape am i in and what do i need to do? I am a computer science major and how important is gpa in this industry?

a lot of engineering students get this bad GPA in their first year.
the GPA is important in all majors I guess.
anyway,get yourself together ,take a break,and get back to your lessons and the most important thing >>enjoy them.
good luck buddy

cheers;

I think a lot of students, regardless of major, tend to do badly their first year, simply because of the shock from the change from HS to college. I know endless amounts of people who just don’t have the time management and study habits at first, develop them later, and do better the last 2 or 3 years.

Depression is a pretty valid reason to do badly for a semester. It sucks, especially if it’s prolonged.
Just relearn the material you didn’t really understand (you need to know calculus/intro programming well), and move on. Stuff happens, and you can make up the grade you need in 1-2 semesters.

Your first semester GPA doesn’t really matter. Work hard and bring it up in future semesters. As long as you average over 3.0, most companies won’t care too much. What becomes more important is how well you can do on interviews and what your skillset is.

Depends on what companies you’re talking about. A lot of F500s like placing cutoffs at 3.2 or 3.5. It obvious depends on the firm in question. 3.0 is the most common, but you don’t want to end up as a product tester, now do you?

Thanks guys. I have never made a gpa that low in my life. I averaged a 3.5 in highschool. I got 2 c’s that i was expecting be b’s. So mad at myself right now. Its good to know i didnt screw everything up. I did extremely well in cal and i absolutely loved my basic programming class it was everything i wanted it to be. I just wish I didnt have to take english, history, and music appreciation…

As someone who regularly hires engineers, I couldn’t care less what grade you got in english, history, or music appreciation. I care a lot about your technical GPA.

Yeah, one option is to report only your CS GPA on your resume (or in addition to your normal GPA).

(A lot of grad schools only want to see your GPA for the last 4 semesters.)

with a 2.3 your first semester and only 13 credits, that really should be a problem. Say you buckle down and work really hard next semester, take 14 credits and manage a 3.6. You are already back up to a 3.0. you can do this more gradual but one semester shouldnt be a problem

If you have been diagnosed with depression, you should register with the office that handles students with disabilities. They can help you get accommodations from your professors in case you need extra time on homework or to delay a test. They WANT to help you, but you have to ask!

If you continue to experience depression, please do not go through that alone. There are services for you, for example, at the student health clinic. You are more likely to excel in school if you are healthy, both physically and mentally. So, please, take good care of yourself.
