I am taking Calculus during the summer before I officially head to college in the fall. I was hoping to transfer the Calc credit to my university, as I found out a lot of the Calculus teachers at my school are not that good, which is why I was taking it at a local college with a decent/better teacher. I've taken AP Calc before at my high school and barely passed it, so I was hoping I could get a second chance this summer.

Too bad summer Calc in college STILL managed to kick my butt (although it's not as hard as it was in high school). I'm passing with a high C at least.

The problem is, I'm wondering how bad will it look if I get a C in Calculus? I have NEVER been good in math in high school, and barely passed all my math classes while getting A's and B's in everything else. Math has always made me uncomfortable and there are always sections that I never understand, even with different teachers and friends trying to explain it to me. Though I am a science major, I am NOT planning on going to med school in the future. I am, however, open to the possibility of going to grad school, and I'm worried that the ONE C on my transcript (or low grades in math classes) will bring down my GPA or make me look bad to grad schools.

Should I just accept the C and know I tried my hardest for it or should I just keep retaking the class/trying until I at least get a B (and quite possibly kill my sanity in the process)?

Does your major require that the class be a B or higher or a C or higher? If it’s a C or higher then you should be okay. Summer classes can be a lot harder because it’s so much information in such a short period of time. A lot of people struggle with those classes so don’t feel bad!

@October47: Oh really? I think I would only need a C to meet requirements, so hopefully I am good. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who has problems with Calculus! Especially in the summer too.

@UAKid: Yes I did. And I found out that the grade does indeed transfer with the credits. Not sure if you can convert to pass/fail, as I’ve never seen that happen at my school before.

@ucbalumnus: I’m planning on majoring in Bio or Neuro at my school. Most likely Bio as I heard it is the “least math intensive” out of all the science majors. As far as I know I would NEVER survive as a Physics or Engineering major.

I got a C in Calculus 101A at my community college, yet I was still able to transfer to a UC. On the other hand, I’m a business major, so calculus isn’t heavily emphasized, and that class was the only C I got in college. Everything else was B’s and A’s.

Just providing you with another perspective.
