How bad will this look on my transcript?

Senior Year:

Calculus - C
Guitar - A
IB Physics- A
Team Sports - A
IB Biology - A
Journalism - A

Second Semester:

(Some other class besides calculus, I want to drop it)

it depends. If you're applying to top 20 schools (ivy league caliber), then yes, a C will hurt (it won't take you out of the running, though). If you are applying to schools that aren't as selective, then it is no problem. Only drop calc. if you feel that you must for the sake of your mental health though...and remember, grades aren't final until December (if you are in a semester system). If you are in a quarter system, there is nearly an entire quarter left to get up-to-speed so your 2nd quarter calc grade is an A or B, showing that you have improvement (which won't be bad at all).

I'm only applying to Emory which is top 20.

Is it ok to drop calculus?

What do you want to major in?

Neuroscience

Maybe if you do well on the SAT2 Math, it could show that you're good at math still but just had issues getting used to calculus.

That's a good idea, I just don't want them to think I caught senioritis and that I dropped a difficult class.

Did you (10 char)?

I don't think I did.

I have A's in all my other classes except Calculus. I really want to drop the class because I know I understand the material, but the way my teacher grades the exams makes the class nearly impossible to get a good grade in.

What happened to your Sr. English and History classes? Will the school allow you to drop the class without any consequences this late into the first semester?

We don't need to take a history class senior year so I decided not to.

My english class is Journalism so I can't drop that, and I really don't want to. :)

I'm actually talking about next semester, if I drop calc now, I get an F.

Got it. I was wondering because most colleges require 4 years of English and 3-4 years of history or such. Double-check your schools' policy about dropping that class - at my D's school, calculus is a year-long class, so even if one completes a semester, s/he will still get "Calculus" on her/his transcript with an F in the next one.

Then don't drop it. A C is so much better than an F any day.

Oh, what I meant was:

If I drop it within the first five days of the second semester, I can change my course from Calculus to something else and I won't get an F in Calculus.

I'm looking to drop it second semester. I have to fight through the pain first semester :(

Would this be a good idea? or does it show schools that I'm a slacker?

Spartan, you can drop the course within 5 days of the start of the next semester, which I assume would happen sometimes in February. Your schedule for this semester is pretty much cemented in, right? My understanding that your first semester grades (including the C) would be the last grades your colleges will see before making the admission decision. So whatever you do in your next semester calculus might not matter that much. They will double-check your final grades for signs of severe senioritis (drop in grades with multiple Cs and worse), and if none is found, you will be a happy college frosh next fall.

Unless this calculus is eating you alive, keep it. Whatever does not kill you makes you stronger :) Good luck in your applications.

That's exactly how my report card looks too... calculus is a killer! I decided to stick with it though, because chances are I'll have to take it in college anyway... and better I get the C over with now and at least be familiar with it than bomb it in college next year.

Good luck!

BunsenBurner, I just don't want colleges to think that I dropped a hard class after applying as some students do. Oh and thanks for quoting Kanye West :)

helenrez, yeah it's better to get a C in HS than get a C in college...good luck to you too!

Yeah that looks a lot like what my senior grades will be. 1 b all of high school so far, and a C/borderline D in BC calc right now. I'm not really worried though, I don't think you should be either.

Woah is calculus killing everyone? My report card looks just like that...C+ in Calc with As across the rest of the board. 1 C won't kill your chances though.

Why is the class of '08 struggling with calculus?!
