how bad would it be to miss classes in the first week?

Hey guys, I'm an incoming transfer student (Anthro) at Cal. I'm supposed to go to Burning Man on Wednesday of next week, so I would miss classes through the following Monday. I don't really know how things work at Berkeley yet, but at junior college the first week was meaningless. What do you guys think, is it safe for me to miss so many classes in my first week?

You'll get kicked out of your courses with discussions. It's your choice on whether or not to take classes though.

What if I attend the first day of each class?

Anthro is an extremely popular the department and many professors will drop you if you don't show up the first week - especially if there are waitlisted students.

Call beforehand and give your professor some plausible story about why you can't attend first week of classes.

As long as you make it look like it was unavoidable and make an effort to contact your GSI and your professor, it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm planning on going Monday and Tuesday to the first session of each class. I'll miss the first couple of discussion sections because they're at the end of the week. I'll call just to be safe.

^ discussions are way more important than lectures for enrollment. They are all that matters. And yeah, you have to call.

It's pretty important to show up for all your discussion/lab sections for the first 2 weeks of class.

Welcome to the big leagues, where things get serious.

yup if you don't show up to your sections the first week, you get dropped automatically in most classes

Are these upper div classes? Are you waitlisted for any of them? How big are the classes? I think you'd better go to class, especially since you're a transfer and need to get acquainted with the berkeley system.
