How badly do a lot of "W's" on my transcript hurt my chances of getting into UCLA?

I began college at a California CC back in 2010 and was on and off until 2013. I ended up dropping a lot of classes between those years because of my depression. I accumulated up to 9 W’s.

But I got back into school in Summer 2015 and since then I only got one W because I accidentally missed the deadline to drop without a W so now I have 10 in total. I have completed 51 units and I plan to apply to UCLA this upcoming Fall so that I can attend next year in Fall 2017. There are other UC’s I am also applying to but that is my first choice because I live in LA. Will these withdrawals hurt my chances of getting into a UC? I might drop one of my classes because I am doing poorly in it but my overall UC transferable units GPA is 3.67. I am also in the Honors Program at my school and when I complete it I will be UCLA TAP certified.

Please share your experiences with this if you can! I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I not sure about 10 Ws, To be honest, that’s quite a lot.

However, I’ll provide my information for you.

I have a total of 6 Ws, and I got into UCLA with a UC transferable GPA of 3.61, and one major prep missing. (C++ Programming).

I think you are in a pretty good shape since you will compete your UCLA TAP. I don’t really think Ws will effect your chance at all, but try not to get more.

Thanks! I am trying my best not to get more! I actually retook all of the classes that I had W’s for though so do you think that will make the W’s look any less…bad?

They won’t care, particularly since you retook and passed all of them. Even if you hadn’t, they wouldn’t care. I remember seeing someone with like 19 W’s getting accepted to UCLA several years ago.

Thanks for your response Cheolf! Yeah I think I saw that post too but I wasn’t sure if it’s changed since then!

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. I had 3 semesters before a long gap that were mostly made up of failing grades and W’s. My overall GPA is just a little higher than yours and I didn’t even get too into the reasoning behind my poor performance semesters in my statements. Just be aware of the average GPA for your intended major, if you’re competitive there then you can push yourself ahead with your statements.
