how badly does a 'D' ruin college admission?

I have had a 'D' in algebra2 honors junior yr. Is there any possibility of me getting into a good college such as University of Illinois(general admission), Champaign of UIC? I don't do any sports, i am not involved activities outside of school

My entire previous high school career includes:

one honors class during freshman year, all regular
all honors classes sophmore, all honors and 2 AP classes junior year, except french

and senior year:
AP Government, AP lit, AP french, AP Biology, AP Stats, Gym

My extracurriculars include:
9 : Math team
10:-
11: DECA, FCCLA, Art Club, Tae-Kwon-Do, volunteering at the library
12: DECA,FCCLA,Art Club, School Store, volunteering at the library

How screwed am i?

You need to explain and address it without making excuses. A D in ap calc destroyed an otherwise high scoring, stellar student’s chances at all their top choices. Do not know if it was the D, or just ignoring it that was the bigger problem.

address it to the college admissions officers? what if the teacher who was at fault?

what if i did everything within my reach: after school help, math lab and peer tutoring?

Wirte about that in a letter to the admissions officers. You dont need to do like Dear Admissions Officers…Blah Blah…Thanks, Name. Just write something that explains why you struggled so much in that class and state that you tried everything in your reach. Was there a family issue like a death or something?

Oh and if you do well next year in math, you can show how you worked hard towards improving.

Get really high test scores, and do what 1253729 instructed.

Good luck.

retake the class, this would show colleges that you are not a quitter and that you are willing to do better

And when you retake, try really hard to get an A.

Agree with what everyone else posted - only other thing is that if the math teachers at your hs are truly awful, then take College Algebra and then pre-calc at a community college
I’ve heard that one anomaly per application won’t derail you at most colleges, so you still have a good chance if everything else is OK.

^ I disagree, sort of.

Sure, going to a community college to escape a problem could be a last resort, but colleges generally don’t like any problems whatsoever. So by going somewhere else to take the class, it shows imperfection, whereas just retaking it and getting an “A” can show that you have it in you to do anything if you set your mind to it.

my entire schedule is full for next yr…i have lunch but during that time i work in the school store…i could not be able to take the class again unless i quit another…so is in my best interest to give up the school store and retake the class or retake the class at the community college?

definitely man,

I mean seriously, this is a freaking “D” we are dealing with. You can’t just throw in the towel to work at the school store. It will not be fun, but still you gotta do it.

thanks for the advice!

no problem, that’s what we are here for.

If you are a resident of IL, you should be fine. My sister got into UIUC with a pretty terrible GPA.

Oh, yeah.

Are you in state?

what does UIC then really look at? UofI champaign is pretty hard to get into so i’ve heard…i know UIC is the easier option. Does that mean with my statistics i can still get admitted to UIC or not?

You know, I just realized that this thread has nothing to with the ACT.

Have you taken it?

yes i have…i currently have a 24 but i am going to take it again

24 is acceptable for UIC but not for UofI
