My marks in high school aren't very good ...
Class 9 - 85.5%, 83%
Class 10 - 81.6%, 84.8%
ICSE - 93%
Class 11 - 80%, 76.75%
Class 12 - 85.25%

How badly do such low marks screw my chances at premier institutions abroad? I harbor a desire to study at Harvard/Brown. Do I have a realistic chance of getting in with marks like these ignoring other factors?

My marks are hardly better than you(except in 9/10). If the other stuff and your class rank is great, you’ll have a chance. But except for the highest performing individuals, few have what you can call a ‘realistic’ chance. You’ve gotta be a lucky duck for any college.

Damn. My class rank ain’t too great either. Top 10 of class, but never near the top 3. Extracurriculars is not much of a problem - i got quiz team captain, quiz club president, space club director, nature club member, basketball and rugby school team, english writing, editor of school supplement, regular contributor to school magazine, house band guitarist, house dramatics team. So i dont think extracurricular is a problem.
SAT I i got 2210, but i’m gonna retake in Jan. SAT II results are still pending. And yes, I’m obviously applying for fin aid. In fact, I need a full scholarship.

i’m from modern school and i had a yale representative come to our school to give us a talk on financial aid and admissions process…
your percentage marks don’t matter much…but what they do see(not yale…all colleges in general) is your class rank…if you are aiming for ivies then you should be in the top 5% of your class…maximum rank 2-3

there are only 8 schools in america which are need blind for amissions and need based for financial aid for INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS…
this means that when you apply to the following colleges they first see you application without looking at your financial status…if they admit you…then they will give as much fin aid as you require:-
Dartmouth College
Harvard University,
MIT,
Princeton University,
Williams College,
Yale University, and
Amherst College

and i think those percentages are good for icse…

im an international student (india) and i wanted to come for my undergrad to the U.S…just wanted an opinion of how good my co curriculars are and what the probability of me getting into good colleges like MIT, Stanford, CalTech …etc are …

2200 in SAT-1
800-Maths 1
800-Math 2
800-Physics
790-Chemistry

been in top 5% of class in IX, X, XI and hopefully class XII…

Class 9th-87 % (came second out of 160)
Class 10th-89.6 = 90 %
Class 11th-91% (first position)
Class 12th-92.8 % (first Position)in first semester

recieved distinctions in all 5 subjects from 9th through 12th.

played tennis for 8 years and had a state ranking (Under-12 # 10) and (Under-14 # 31) …india rank (U-14 # 144 )i still play …but not from a competitive aspect…

ive taken part in various competitions (and won a few) like science fairs, and i’m a prefect (which is like a school captain…ten students out of 160 are selected)…

currently co-curricular head of school and hoping to become HEADBOY

i have finished more than 300 hours of social work teaching poor and illiterate children
(30 hours in the required amount for an A grade by school ).
I have also collected about 15-20 certificates from 9th-12th

I am also trying to get my friend and my design of emergency brakes for elevators using magnetic levitation pateneted.

Will i be able to make it into MIT (i know nothing is for sure…it all depends on them) …but i need to know wehter my co-curriculars are up to the mark and wether I’m actually competition to other international kids…nad if they have limited funding for internationals…would they consider me ?

viren, you’re obviously on your way to a good college regardless of ivy league (cos, facing reality, ivy admissions is a crapshoot). but your chances are definitely better than mine. i so regret not studying properly. too involved and distracted by everything else!
