How big a role does SAT writing play in admissions?

If your SAT writing is your lowest score, how does this affect you in admissions? I have close to a 1500 with CR and M which is good, but only a about a 2100 with the writing added on? I hope to study finance. Does my 600 writing score kill my hopes for a top schools?

Generally Critical Reading and Math scores are given the priority in an admission decision though Writing scores still do play a significant enough role in the determination of an admission decision. Based off your information, I am assuming that your Writing score is just shy of 600. If you plan on applying to and attending a top 30 university or a top 20 LAC, a score around 600 for Writing is low, but it probably will not have a devastating impact on your admission decision, especially since you plan to study finance. You still have to time to re-take the SAT before most college applications are due, generally on November 1, if you plan to raise your Writing score. It took me until the September of my senior year to achieve my goal ACT score. Good luck!

@FLStudent97 My writing is a 610. I just hope since the writing section is being eliminatednext year that they will give evenless weight to it for this upcoming year.

I also might try the ACT september for the first time.

I would definitely recommend taking the ACT. I took both the SAT and ACT and did better on the ACT comparatively by 200 SAT points. You may prefer one over the other.

Critical reading and math are definitely the priority when it comes to admissions. For instance William and Mary looks primarily at CR+M scores and by those standards you would be in the upper echelon of standardized testing. Those schools place a heavier weight on your essays and possible recommendations for evaluations of your writing ability
