looking to see if i could bring my monitor + desktop to save some money instead of buying a full fledge laptop.

all desk should be able to fit a desktop, I think Crown has the smallest dorms, and I can easily fit my desktop

ah i see. Would a 24inch monitor fit comfortably on the desk with sufficient space for books and etc if you need to study.

Something to note: in the dorms at Porter, the desks have a mini-bookshelf type thing attached to the top of the desks. Space might be an issue if you were sharing a room, but since you are in a single (I’m assuming for sure??), it shouldn’t be a problem.

i think i should be able to get the single. I’m a transfer student should be able to ask for one right?

yes, you will probably get a single, Im using a 24 inch right now in a small triple, and theres plenty more room

It’s not a guarantee for a transfer to get a single at Porter especially since they’ve created that horrible transfer community that takes up so much space. I lucked out I was able to get one my entire time at UCSC because of my class standing when I arrived (transfer myself, but before the transfer community), my age, and other factors they take into consideration when giving out singles. However, Porter does seem to have a high number of single rooms.

As for the desks, they’re more than adequate for a desktop computer. I currently have my 26" LED TV on my desk that doubles as my monitor, my tower is full sized so it sits under the desk, a 3 gallon fish tank (that fits under the hutch even with its light fixture), and a phone (novelty character one so not small). My speakers are on top of the hutch that’s on the desk. I usually keep some of my books in the space remaining on the hutch as well as scattered on my desk and around my room. Unless you’ve got a 24" CRT monitor, you should find it to be no problem in any Porter dorm. A 24" CRT would be a pain in any dorm room, though (I should know, I had a 20" CRT TV for awhile and it took up more space even on the wardrobe than it deserved).

I do, however, keep my printer on a little side drawer thing our rooms come with. It sits next to my desk. If I didn’t have the fish tank, I could keep the printer on my desk, but it’d be a tight squeeze with the size of my TV/monitor.

If you need a single for medical reasons, be sure to list those in your housing application. I’m definitely not saying it’s impossible to get a single, just that you need to make it as clear as possible why you need a single and why you want one :). Just simple advice from my own experience applying for singles.

If you absolutely cannot live without being in a single, The Village is a guaranteed single.
