How big are the usual classes?

I sat in on some big lecture hall classes at a different school. It was awful. It really is not for me.

I have a couple teachers that keep insisting I need to apply to UT Austin for Plan 2. It sounds great and all, but I just also worry so much that the classes will be too big. Plus, I am a little undecided about my major, so I am also worried I cannot easily try different classes until I decide for sure.

I am not a Plan II major, but I’ll answer as best as I can. Class sizes vary depending on the subject. General classes like Introduction to Chemistry have roughly 300 students. Other classes like Sociology have only about 40 students. If a class is required by most majors it will probably be pretty large. To combat this you can always attend office hours. Professors and TA’s will be glad to talk to you or help you with any thing during this time.
It is fairly easy to switch majors once you have declared one as a freshman, especially if it is within the same college. Also, a lot of majors require the same general core classes, so you can always get those out of the way while you decide what you want to major in.
Hope this helps.

check with plan 2 admission office. as i know the plan2 class is very small.

Apply for an honors college. Plan II is basically where you go if you want 1) your soul to die and 2) to act like you’re better than everyone else at UT. Classes outside of Plan II are going to be very large (my parents both graduated from UT and I have several friends who go, all of whom said their smallest class was about 50), but that’s the same for any big state school. Plan II differs in that yes, the classes are smaller, but they’re still going to be large at some points. Remember, this is a HUGE school, not a small liberal arts school. Plan II is also its own major, which will only get you anything if you’re applying to get a masters in something humanities related.

If it’s small classes you want, you’re very unlikely to find many at UT. That’s not to say you can’t get a good education - most classes will have TA lead discussion sessions where you can sit in a smaller class setting.
