How big is UMICH on essays?

Just wondering since they receive THOUSANDS of applicants, how much does the essay weigh in the admissions process? Cause I feel like mine was just average if anything and I hope that doesn't hurt my chances of getting in :/

I feel like they aren’t that important in my opinion if your overall app is solid.

Mine were very average… I wrote them on Halloween…but I’m still very confident I’m going to get in. I think as long as the essays weren’t terrible and you didn’t sound crazy in them, it’s fine.

Like can those 40,000 essays really be that unique and special…idk.

I mean as long as you didn’t write a really really crappy essay it shouldn’t be THAT big of a deal

I feel like the essays are only going to affect your admission decision if they are blatant crap or if the rest of your app was overall weak

Essays can be your key to getting into Michigan, they give them a chance to read about you and give you a chance to give them a “wow factor” if you’re essays were not good, that is a lost opportunity to impress them. They really do put a lot on essays.

I believe that the essays are very important if you are applying for the business or engineering programs. Many people who are applying specifically to these programs have similar credentials. The stand out would be a passionate essay on why you should be the one to get accepted. Lots of smart people out there…put your energy into a well rounded application .

Gotcha… yeah for most of my essay, I talked about my passion for business and kind of neglected LSA… yikes. But I think the rest of my app is strong so I hope it doesn’t jeopardize my chances of getting into LSA.

Hey Never Stop Smiling…your passion for business will not jeopardize your chances…some people going into school don’t yet have a passion for anything.I believe that if you don’t make it into Ross, you will make it into the school. Once in it’s what you do with it. Have confidence and feel good that you gave your application a second thought. Best of Luck!!

i’m sure nobody’s essay is like “i LOVE LANGUAGE SCIENCE AND THE ARTS!” haha so dont worry!

^^ahahahaha :D

@lindsyoxo: That’s because it’s Literature, Science, and the Arts. :)

hahaha well good thing i applied to kinesiology then ;)

@OP
my essay was all about my passion about Business too. I didn’t talk about LSA at all, and I asked the admissions officer, and she told me to just talk about Ross b/c I was applying there.
