@gabby2 what was your factor of separation?

@jpm50 – Marilee Jones, the MIT admissions dean who lied about graduating from college on her MIT job application. Hope MIT verifies college applications a little better than their employment applications.

@Islmom:
I met Marilee nearly four decades ago when she started as an admin at MIT. She rose to the Director of Admissions on her widely recognized and hard earned merit. Yes, like all of us, she made a poor decision in her past. But did that warrant your cheap shot at her?

That Marilee Jones lied about graduating from college is just a fact, not a cheap shot.

Thank you.

If you have to ask whether you get to classify yourself as something, or whether you “count”, or whatever, then you might want to take a step back and reconsider.

With your proven entrepreneurial success you should consider Stanford which really appreciates kids like yourself. I think it might be a better fit and is equally prestigious. Great financial aid if that is an issue for you.

@Chris I largely agree with that sentiment but I do want to note that census race categories are somewhat arbitrary and I can imagine legitimate questions from North Africans or Middle Easterners about what race they count as. Obviously I do not think that is the case here though.

@mitchris Ok, thanks for the solid advice. I’ll just put asian on my application even if it dooms me to rejection! (only joking).

@keesh17 The chances of me getting into stanford are about as high as me playing pro ball for the NFL (I’m a chubby indian kid who has never played sports).

@"UMTYMP student" - absolutely, which is why we a) allow students to check multiple boxes and b) provide an open-ended optional question where students can elaborate upon their culture and background however they please.

That may be true but your have a better shot at Stanford than you do at MIT. I’ve been on Stanford tours twice and both times the admissions people mentioned Stanford’s appreciation for out-of-the-box extracurriculars

@su1xsu2xsu3 Have you considered the Wharton business school at UPenn? Since you have already started your own successful business, you might have a shot. UPenn also offers a dual-degree program combining engineering or computer science with business.

@islmom @keesh17 how do I report my business on my application? do I have to submit income records and official documents? Or can I just write about my business in my application and submit my portfolio of photos and videos?

No income records or official documents needed. Yes, write about it - especially about difficulties you problem-solved, mistakes you learned from, the perseverance needed to start and run a business, etc. Yes, submit the portfolio if schools have a process for submitting portfolios.

@su1xsu2xsu3 I’m interested in business as well, and have a couple (tiny) side businesses as well. I suggest looking at UMich -they have an entrepreneurs program as well as a program to offer a business degree in conjunction with engineering, if that’s what you are after. Easier shot at getting in, plus they have a few merit scholarships. I would definitely submit to MIT as well though :)

@su1xsu2xsu3 also list your business and photography in the Activities section. Being featured on ABC, Fox news, and CNN.com really sets you apart from the masses.

@arandomgeek I am not really interested in doing a business degree. My current goal is to do my undergrad in Physics and then go to med school for radiology.

@islmom how should I put my news features in my application? Links? Or should I just mention that I have been featured?

@su1xsu2xsu3 You could put links to the news stories and send a portfolio. At the end of the application it says “If you think that additional information or material will give us a more thorough impression of you, please respond on separate sheets.” I am just a parent and neither of my kids started their own business or were featured on ABC, Fox news, or CNN.com so @MITChris is probably a better person to ask how to highlight your special talents.
