How can a C's affect your chance at UCs

So, i know ucs look at the type of course you take as well as the 'rigor factor.'

Yet sadly, i will get a C on my pre-cal. H 1st sem grade. I take 2 aps (Ap Bio and Ap US) both B's. I'm spooked about getting a c for Ap Bio since i had an 83% and took the finals today. I also take french 4 h (A) as well as a one year course of art for visual arts (A).
For english, our teacher 'decides' to average our grades from 1st quarter and 2nd quarter leaving me with a B+ (89.3% !! unbelievable).

So, I have NEVER gotten a C on my transcript before. I know my 2nd sem i will at least have a B in math, hopefully an A in english. THe 2 ap's ... that depends on my ap exam as to whether i will get an A or a B. For my 2 classes with an A, I have a guarantee that i will get the same grades next sem.

Thus, my C for first sem... I know it WILL affect my chances at a uc ( i want to go to UCI, UCD).

However, whenever I fuss about the c and (perhaps 'exagerate') about the impossibility of getting in to the UCs, everyone tells me to stop lying since my courses def. reflect the type of student i am and thus I am guaranteed to go to atleast UCI or UCD (which i beg to differ).

I am planning to major in Communications/english... which is a far cry from my 'C' grade math.

That's why i am here to ask..

HOW MUCH does a C affect your chances at a UC? (preferably UCI and UCD). I know in my apps, i will try to appeal and explain my falter.. which i do have an explanation.

anyone out there has had a similar situation/experience, yet they have been accepted to a uc?

One C should not affect your chances at those UC's. That is a tiny drop in the ocean of information that they take into account when they evaluate your application. Do not worry. It is especially irrelevant since your major will be in the Humanities, not Math or Science. And, yes, I know people who have been accepted into both of those schools with a C on their transcript.

I have a friend who is currently at UCSC who got at least 2 C's is Junior year and still managed to get into UCLA and UCSC probably beacuse his SAT scores were so insane (2360ish). Although this was 3 years ago, it still shows how other factors can offset weak spots in any application.

If you are in your senior year then a C does not matter. However, if you are still a junior, those 2 schools are not nearly as selective as UCLA/UCB, so Cs are ok.
