How can a female soccer player be recruited to a Div. 1 University??

What does she have to do to be recruited?

Be really good at Soccer

What Leopard said. Also, she has to play at tournaments (club or HS) that draw Division I coaches. They can be there to watch anyone, even her opponents, but she needs to be at the right tournaments. And she needs to get playing time and be really, really good when the coaches are watching. Failing playing at the right tournaments, she has to attend the summer camps of the coaches most likely to consider her recruitable. The next way to get recruited is to figure out which Division I schools are a good fit for her (Ex.: if she is a 6’2" goalie and Acme University has all seniors playing keeper the year before she applies to college, then she is a good fit.), then mail a package to the coach with the following: unofficial transcript, xerox copy of test scores, photo, dvd of game play (not highlight), schedule of upcoming games, numbers of current coaches, references (names and numbers are okay if you do not want to collect letters), and a personalized letter to the coach explaining what makes you a good fit for their team and school. Research first. Check NCAA.org for viewing periods for women’s soccer, when the coaches are allowed to call, when quiet time is, what types of tournaments they can attend, etc. Start by looking for the “recruiting calendar” for your sport. If it were me, I would FEDEX it overnight. Then I would call the coach within a few days of its arrival. Coaches cannot call you back if you are not a junior (ncaa.org) so be prepared to call them. No one likes to be pestered, but Division One sports are tough so a coach will appreciate a little persistence. If you are not a good fit for their school, ask them if they can suggest another program. Coaches refer recruits all of the time. Good luck.

D2 is heading to play DI soccer this fall. She has always played on a strong competitive club team that travels around the country to play in tournaments and showcases. We designed a player profile that contained all her academic info with her soccer stats/details and references. This profile was emailed along with a letter introducing herself to college coaches at schools she was interested in. She would include what upcoming tournaments/games she would be playing in. Most showcase tourneys will have attending coach contact info. Even if a coach isn’t listed send your schedule and they may show up to watch. D2 never attended a camp or sent dvd/video or sent copies of anything until we knew the school was a good fit. The best thing is exposure. Try for showcases scattered throughout country so as many coaches as possible can see her play.

I think you should also gague if she has a chance to play at that level. As yourself this.

Does your daughters school often send kids to D-I? If so is she comparable to those players?

If the school rarely or never sends kids to D-I its a bit harder to compare. Is she the best on her team or even the area or league? If she plays for a weak team and isnt even the best on her team look to D-III

Almost all DI players around here are recruited from their club teams. I don’t know anyone over the past few years who was recruited from HS team.

That may be true, but it would make sesne to have a realistic talent assesment as early as possible. If the young lady has D-III talent then resources would be better spent looking for a compatible school at that level.

To sum up some of these posts, if you are asking the question of what is needed to be recruited, you might be a bit late or not the target audience.
Take a look at this website which tracks the current verbal committments. Note that many D1’s are working on their 2011 graduates, and lots of the D1’s are just about finished with their 2010 class. You see a few late 2009’s for D1’s, but those are the exceptions.
Take a look at the roster for the D1 schools of interest, and look at the pedigree of the players. If the coach takes mostly ODP players, and the player in question has never tried out much less made the State team, then cross that school off the list. D1’s will recruit from club teams for the large majority of their recruits, so you have to follow the information in bessie’s post to get in that loop.
The question is so broad from the original post, it would be easier for those of us who have been through this to help you if you provide more information.

oops. forgot to give the website for soccer committments. This is a great listing for women’s soccer.

Anybody got a link to the men’s recruiting?

You need to put together a soccer resume, also includes your academic stuff. This has been suggested in other threads. Put time into it. D is a Div 1 athlete (just finished freshman year) but not for soccer.
