I want to go to college in America and I am wondering what if any scholarships are available that cover the full tuition for international students(I am Irish) What requirements would I have to meet in order for me to be eligible to be chosen? Please tell me if you know of any college that offers a scholarship like this, thanks

Good grades, outstanding sat or act.

There are few scholarships. For those, sometimes you need to show great leadership, overcoming adversity, something to do with diversity, etc. Different scholarships have different requirements. Good grades is a requirement for all scholarships.

However, financial aid is very much available for international students in the US. a lot of times this fin aid funds the majority, if not all, of your educational expenses. This aid is need-based, not merit-based. So as long as you get in, with good essays, grades, and SATs, you should get this if your need is demonstrated in the required forms.

Thanks, I think that there is an SAT test happening a little over 3 months in Ireland, would that be enough time to do well enough to deserve a scholarship? and I know it depends on the college, but on average what SAT scores would we be talking about to get a scholarship? And I am fairly sure that I would require full financial assistance as I would need financial assistance for Irish colleges. Do you know where I can search for colleges that offer that scholarships that I want?

You need to have either amazing stats at a second- or third-tier college or decent stats at a very non-selective college. I know an international student who has a full tuition scholarship to a very small, private university in my hometown that is completely unknown outside a 20-mile radius. Her stats are good, but not amazing.

mattparker,

There are many threads on this topic in the Financial Aid Forum, and in the International Students Forum. Go to the main page where all of the forums are listed, and scroll down to find those forums. In the International Students Forum, read everything b@r!um has posted about finding financial aid, or send her a PM for advice. Her strategies are excellent.

Wishing you all the best!

I will do that now, thanks for the help!

Either attend a second rate university that will give you a large merit scholarship (probably not worth it considering that you could attend a top university in Ireland like Cork or Trinity for almost free anyway) or get an acceptance from a university that meets 100% of demonstrated need (assuming you come from a low income family). However, those universities, like Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT, Princeton and Williams (to name a few) are extremely selective.

Only 6 schools (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Dartmouth, and Amherst) offer international students need-blind admissions and coverage of full, demonstrated financial need. As Alexandre indicates, these schools are extremely selective (in some cases admitting less than 10% from highly qualified applicant pools).

Some other schools are need-aware (the admission decision takes need into account) but still generous with aid to accepted international students.

Hey…I’m an international student as well and I recently was offered full tuition merit scholarship at Northeastern University in Boston. I’m not sure I will attend though. There was no separate application for the scholarship…everyone who applies is considered.
