How can freshman, in specific schools, manage to have a car?

well i dont even have a car right now. i have saved some money to get a car (probably very cheap car ;;).
then now i am wondering if i should even get a car. oh well.

Part of me says only get a car if you really need it. Why? Because a car is nothing but a financial drain. You always have to put money into the car, regardless of how old, new, expensive, or cheap. The car's value depreciates, it never goes up. You always have to pay maintenance if something fails, pay for gas, parking tickets, parking permits, repair if you get into an accident, yearly taxes on it, insurance, etc. Not to mention the fact that owning one adds the hassle of having something else to look after.

Nothing but a waste of money if you don't use it. My advice...go to college as a freshman without a car, bum rides with friends and after your first or second year if you decide that you really need the car, get one. This is also good because as a freshman, you probably don't know the area as well, so if you bum rides, you shouldn't get lost and you'll learn the area before you get a car.

i got it.

well. in my area, where a car is more like required and every junior has, i do need it. i am sick and tired of taking school bus (which is very ohkay compared to sucky yucky city bus system).

but i couldnt really get it, since i know i have only couple months left and it's idiotic to buy a car now and sell it in 3 months. that's why i need to think about a college as well.

what do you think?

Most HS'ers have valid reasons for having a car. The thing with college students is that usually they live on campus freshman year, therefore all they need to do is walk to class. Granted some commute, and then you have the excuse that you want to go out with friends and have fun, so you automatically need a car. That's not necessarily true, only one or two people of the group of friends really needs a car...when you go out on trips and whatnot, it's not like everyone takes their own car. Most of the time everyone piles into one car.

All I'm saying is that if the campus is one that has everything you need on it, then it's probaly for your benefit to not have a car for at least freshman year because that's one less thing you need to worry about. Another thing about freshmen having cars is that usually if they are allowed to have cars, they get the parking areas in east oshkosh. In other words, seniors get the spaces right next to the classrooms/dorms, and the freshmen have to walk from their cars if no shuttle system is provided..and even if one is provided, you have to wait for the shuttle. So does it save more time than just walking to the class from your dorm? Not really.

I don't really mean to be against cars freshman year, I'm just logically showing that a car isn't needed, at least for the freshman year that is.

I definitely think juniors/seniors should have a car because by then, they know the area around the college, not to mention most juniors/seniors rent apartments off campus, so a car would be required to get to class.
